Country singer Alexandra Kay is coming to the defense of her friend Maggie Baugh, shutting down rumors that Baugh is romantically involved with Keith Urban following his split from Nicole Kidman.

In a new interview with Taste of Country published Wednesday, Oct. 22, Kay called the rumors “absolutely not true” and said the speculation has been difficult to watch. “Honestly, I was heartbroken for them because the media scrutiny is insane and the things that people say,” Kay told the outlet. “They’re stirring up rumors about Maggie Baugh, and I’m like, ‘She’s a good friend of mine and I know that’s absolutely not true.’”

Kay added that Baugh, 25, is in a committed relationship. “I’ve met her boyfriend, and she’s very happy, and she has nothing to do with that whole relationship [with Urban],” she said. “I feel sad for everybody involved that people are doing that and picking apart their personal life. I pray for peace for them and for everybody to have their privacy.”

Rumors began swirling earlier this month after reports confirmed that Urban, 57, and Kidman, 58, had separated after nearly two decades of marriage. PEOPLE reported that Kidman officially filed for divorce on Sept. 30, citing irreconcilable differences.

Speculation about Urban’s relationship with Baugh intensified after footage surfaced of the country star changing the lyrics to his hit song “The Fighter” — originally inspired by Kidman — during a live show. Instead of the usual line, “When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter,” Urban sang, “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie I’ll be your guitar player.” Baugh later posted the clip on Sept. 26 with the caption, “Did he just say that👀,” sparking a wave of online chatter.

However, longtime fans were quick to point out that Urban often improvises his lyrics in concert. At the 2017 CMT Music Awards, he similarly changed the lyrics while performing with Carrie Underwood, singing, “Carrie Underwood, I’m gonna be your fighter.”

Recently, Urban addressed the gossip during a concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Oct. 17, urging fans to stop reading too much into his performances. “I’ve been covering like this for a long time,” he said. “Stop reading s— into it. It’s called ‘You’ll Think of Me.’”
