Simon Cowell and Sofía Vergara are back for Season 20 of America’s Got Talent (AGT), marking a major milestone for the long-running NBC competition.

In an interview with Deadline, the judges opened up about their nerves, surprises, and the impact of social media on the show.

Cowell admitted he still gets nervous before the first day of filming, saying he often doubts the season after day one, but then is blown away by talent on day two.

Vergara echoed the sentiment, sharing that even after years on the panel, she’s still amazed by how acts manage to feel fresh and exciting.

The two also discussed how the rise of platforms like TikTok and YouTube has changed the landscape of talent discovery.

Cowell pointed out that social media fame and live performance are two totally different experiences, while Vergara noted AGT brings acts to a broader family audience that they wouldn’t reach online.

Cowell recalled the viral moment of Susan Boyle, whose audition on Britain’s Got Talent racked up 500 million views in 48 hours, showing the power of the internet in launching careers.

Season 20 also brings Mel B back to the judge’s panel, replacing Heidi Klum.

Vergara, who had never met Mel B before, admitted she was a bit “scared” at first.

But those nerves quickly vanished when filming began, and she realized Mel B was experienced, friendly, and clicked easily with the team.

Cowell praised Mel B’s unpredictable and fiery personality, calling her “a firework” whose reactions often surprise everyone.

Despite her strong opinions, Cowell believes her return added a fresh energy and dynamic chemistry to the panel.

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
