Marc Maron, host of the influential WTF podcast, reflected on his show’s legacy after 16 years, acknowledging its role in legitimizing podcasting as a powerful medium.

In a recent blog post and podcast episode, he expressed concern that podcasts—once a tool for self-expression—have now become platforms for propaganda, toxicity, and even “pure evil.”

While Maron sees himself as partly responsible for helping to popularize the format, he sharply criticized how the medium now often normalizes fascism.

Without naming names, Maron condemned comedians who host white supremacists and fascists, arguing that such platforms promote violent autocracy and anti-American sentiment.

His comments closely followed Joe Rogan’s podcast appearance with Donald Trump, and Maron noted the stark contrast between his own show and Rogan’s, despite both emerging from the same early podcasting wave.

He further warned that some comics and influencers may be aligning with right-wing movements for selfish gain, saying “fascism is good for business if you toe the line.”

Citing the increasing tribalism and influence of major podcasts, Maron cautioned they may become tools of an anti-democratic media oligarchy.

Earlier this month, Maron announced he would end WTF in the fall. The podcast launched in 2009.
