Michael Tait, former lead singer of the Christian rock band Newsboys, has publicly confessed to years of drug abuse and making “unwanted sensual” advances toward men, following a recent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.

Tait, 59, who left the band in January 2025, made the confession in an Instagram post titled “My Confession” on Tuesday, June 10. This came after The Roys Report published an investigation on June 4, detailing allegations from three men who claimed Tait sexually assaulted them during Christian music tours in 2004, 2010, and 2014. Tait had joined Newsboys in 2009.

In his statement, Tait admitted that most of the allegations are “sadly, largely true,” revealing that for nearly 20 years, he abused cocaine and alcohol and acted inappropriately with men. He said, “I am ashamed of my life choices and actions and make no excuses for them… I will simply call it what God calls it — sin.”

Tait also confirmed that his decision to leave Newsboys was to seek help for his struggles. He entered a six-week rehab program in Utah, where he began a journey toward sobriety and spiritual healing. “I was tired of leading a double life,” he wrote. “I have been clean and sober since.”

He expressed deep remorse for the pain he caused, stating, “I can only dream and pray for human forgiveness, because I certainly don’t deserve it.” He acknowledged the damage to fans’ trust and expressed hope that his failings wouldn’t push people away from faith in Jesus.

Tait ended his message by saying he plans to continue his repentance and healing privately, away from public life.

Meanwhile, the remaining Newsboys members — Jeff Frankenstein, Jody Davis, Duncan Phillips, and Adam Agee — responded with their own statement on June 5. They said they were “horrified, heartbroken, and angry” upon learning the news and feel “deceived for the last fifteen years.”

The situation has left many fans and the Christian music community in shock, as they reckon with the contrast between Tait’s public image and private life.
