Kyle MacLachlan says he’d love to return as Trey on And Just Like That, but turned down the writers’ first idea, hoping for a more meaningful storyline.

Kyle MacLachlan is signaling that he’d be more than happy to dust off his tailored suits and slip back into the role of Trey MacDougal on HBO Max’s And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City sequel, but only if the writers can find a story worthy of Charlotte’s (Kristin Davis) first husband.
Trey, who debuted in Season 3 of the original series back in 2000, was introduced as the quintessential Upper East Side catch: a brilliant cardiologist from an old-money family, complete with impeccable manners and a surprisingly sensitive soul.
His whirlwind romance with Charlotte felt like a fairy-tale match—until real life, and a few too many family dramas, got in the way.
MacLachlan recently told Us Weekly that when the show’s writers initially pitched Trey’s return, he politely but firmly pushed back. “I said, ‘I think there should be more,’” he explained.
Rather than simply slotting Trey into Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte’s modern-day adventures, MacLachlan would prefer a storyline rich enough to honor the character’s past—and Charlotte’s.
He even floated the idea of Trey running a successful Napa winery, a cheeky wink to his WASPy background and a fresh way to show how much he’s grown since their split.
Meanwhile, Davis has been candid about her own hopes for Trey’s comeback. On her podcast, Are You a Charlotte?, she admitted she was “kind of mad” when she heard Trey’s return might be half-baked.
To her, seeing Trey again isn’t just fan service—it would give Charlotte’s arc a sense of closure and joy. “She really wants to see him,” Davis said. “And I, Kristin, also feel that way.”
Davis even teased the possibility of a chance encounter—a casual meet-up at a restaurant or charity event—that would allow both characters to catch up without any heavy dramatics.
She reminded listeners that when you’ve shared such a memorable chapter, you want the reunion to feel “glorious,” not heartbreaking.
As for whether Trey will actually make his grand re-entrance, MacLachlan remains optimistic. He praised the cast and crew, calling them “lovely,” and said he “adores” the show.
Now it’s up to the writers to craft an idea that’s as charming and unexpected as Trey himself—one that does justice to a fan-favorite character and gives Charlotte the heartwarming reunion she deserves.
