Ben Affleck Talks About Life in the Spotlight and Managing Family Privacy

Affleck talks to Kevin Hart about fame, preferring directing, and protecting his children’s privacy

In a candid conversation with Kevin Hart on the season 4 premiere of “Hart to Heart,” Ben Affleck opened up about his preference for working behind the camera and his approach to handling public attention, especially when it comes to protecting his children.

Affleck, 51, shared insights into his life, fame, and how he and his wife, Jennifer Lopez, navigate the intense public interest in their lives.

Affleck, who has established himself as both an accomplished actor and director, admitted to Hart, 44, that he sees himself more as a director.

He revealed that his preference for directing stems from his shy nature and discomfort with excessive attention.

“I also don’t like a lot of attention,” he admitted. “This is why people see me and think, ‘Well, this dude always looks mad…’ Because someone always has a camera in my face.”

Despite his discomfort with constant attention, Affleck clarified that he doesn’t mind fans taking pictures at public events like clubs or premieres. “My wife, I don’t give a f—. Go ahead.

Knock yourself out. I don’t notice you,” he said. However, he drew a firm line when it comes to his children. “My children, that’s a different thing.”

Affleck shares three children with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner: Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.

He is also a stepfather to Lopez’s 16-year-old twins, Max and Emme, from her previous marriage to Marc Anthony. Protecting their privacy is a priority for him.

Discussing the public’s reaction to him and Lopez, Affleck noted the stark difference in how fans approach them. While he receives casual acknowledgments for his work, Lopez’s presence elicits overwhelming excitement.

“We went somewhere with [Jennifer]—I can’t remember because she’s so famous, and she creates this—people love her. And she really represents something important to people,” he said.

Affleck shared a vivid anecdote to illustrate this point, recounting a family outing in Times Square that quickly turned chaotic due to Lopez’s fame.

“We get out of the car, we were going to a play, and I was like, ‘F— it, babe, we’re going to be late, we gotta walk a block and a half.’ [Lopez] was like, ‘Alright,’ she didn’t say s—,” he recalled.

As they navigated through Times Square with their children, they were swarmed by fans. “The s— was like f—in’ bananas,” Affleck said.

He described a memorable encounter with a woman in a purple skintight suit, smoking weed, and filming while running backwards, shouting “J-LO!!” This quickly attracted a crowd, making their walk through Times Square a chaotic spectacle.

Affleck acknowledged that in such moments, it’s crucial to remain composed.

Hart agreed, adding, “By the way, in that moment, you got to be oblivious to act like it’s all okay.” Affleck responded with humor, saying, “Totally. Yeah, that’s why I put my bitch face on.”

The episode sheds light on the complexities of balancing public life and personal privacy, especially in a family as high-profile as Affleck and Lopez’s. While Affleck prefers a low-key approach to fame, he recognizes and respects the significant public affection for Lopez.

The conversation with Hart also comes at a time when there have been rumors about Affleck and Lopez’s marriage being under strain.

Lopez is currently vacationing in Italy without Affleck, and their shared Beverly Hills mansion is up for sale. The couple last appeared together publicly at Samuel’s graduation earlier in June.

As Affleck continues to navigate his career and family life, his candid reflections on fame, privacy, and protecting his children offer a glimpse into the challenges faced by celebrities.

Despite the public scrutiny, Affleck remains dedicated to shielding his family from the intense spotlight, even if it means occasionally putting on a “bitch face” to get through the day.

“Hart to Heart” airs Thursdays on Peacock, providing fans with more insights into the lives of their favorite celebrities.
