Brad Pitt is reportedly feeling a mix of emotions after learning that his 18-year-old daughter Shiloh has filed to remove “Pitt” from her last name, a source close to the actor tells PEOPLE.

This news comes at a difficult time for Pitt, who shares six children with ex-wife Angelina Jolie.

According to the insider, Pitt is deeply saddened by Shiloh’s decision. “He’s aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name. He’s never felt more joy than when she was born. He always wanted a daughter,” the source reveals.

The move to change her name legally comes on the heels of significant family tension following Jolie’s 2016 filing for divorce and sole physical custody of their children.

The process has reportedly strained Pitt’s relationship with his kids over the years, making Shiloh’s decision all the more poignant.

“The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them. It’s very sad,” adds the insider.

Despite the emotional turmoil, the source notes that Pitt remains in a positive relationship with Ines de Ramon, his current partner.

However, the ongoing distance from his children continues to weigh heavily on him. “He’s still happy with Ines,” the source continues, but the distance from his children “pains him.”

Another source close to the actor corroborates the sentiment, emphasizing Pitt’s enduring love for his children despite the challenging circumstances. “He still loves all of his kids tremendously,” they say. “This whole process has been very hard for the whole family.”

Shiloh’s legal request for a name change, filed on May 27, her 18th birthday, is to go by simply “Shiloh Jolie.” This is not an isolated incident within the family.

Vivienne, another of Jolie and Pitt’s children, has also appeared to go by “Vivienne Jolie” in public documents, such as the Playbill for the musical The Outsiders, which she helped her mother produce.

It remains unclear whether Vivienne has legally changed her name, but the choice to publicly drop “Pitt” is notable. Their eldest daughter, Zahara, has also been seen using the name “Zahara Marley Jolie.”

Last November, Zahara introduced herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie” in a video shared by Essence while joining the Mu Pi chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Spelman College.

These name changes highlight the ongoing tension between Pitt and his children, a situation that has reportedly been difficult for everyone involved.

Since Jolie’s initial filing for divorce, there have been numerous reports of strained relationships and long periods of separation between Pitt and his kids.

In August 2022, a source close to Pitt expressed hope that he would soon reach a better place with his children amid the ongoing custody battle. They described the situation as “a sad situation for years.”

“Since Angelina filed for divorce, Brad has been focused on having the best relationship possible with his kids,” the insider said at the time. “It’s been very difficult for him. Many times, there have been long gaps where he didn’t see the kids at all.”

The ongoing legal battles between Pitt and Jolie have only added to the complexity of their family dynamics.

In a recent dispute over their winery, Chateau Miraval, a former security guard for the couple claimed in legal documents that Jolie allegedly “encouraged” the children to “avoid spending time” with Pitt during visits.

This claim, coming from someone still employed by Pitt, adds another layer to the fraught relationship.

In response, Paul Murphy, an attorney for Jolie, told PEOPLE that Jolie’s primary concern has always been the well-being of the family. “All Angelina has ever wanted was separation and health, with positive relationships between all members of their family, including Mr. Pitt,” Murphy stated.

As the family navigates these changes, the impact on Pitt remains profound. The actor’s connection with his children has been significantly altered since the divorce, and these recent developments continue to challenge his efforts to maintain those bonds.

While Pitt continues to express his love and commitment to his children, the reality of their choices underscores the ongoing complexities within the Jolie-Pitt family.
