Chris Martin Opens Up About Coldplay’s Retirement Plans — But Is He Really Ready to Let Go?

Chris Martin admits he’s learning to “let go” of Coldplay as the band nears its 12-album limit — but new tour dates hint the farewell may take longer.

Coldplay may be closer to the end of an era, but Chris Martin isn’t finding it easy to say goodbye.

The band just wrapped up their massive Music of the Spheres world tour, which kicked off in 2022 and has stretched across multiple years.

Frontman Chris Martin, 48, has long said Coldplay would only release 12 albums before retiring from studio work. So far, they’ve dropped 10, including 2024’s Moon Music, which leaves just two more to go.

Despite the self-imposed finish line, Martin recently admitted he’s struggling with the idea of letting go. Speaking to The Sun, he confessed, “I’m trying to let go of everything, but I still love my job. I love our band, I love what we do, I love the songs… I need to let go of feeling like I need it and just be able to appreciate it when it’s there.”

Coldplay’s next project, confirmed to NME, will be an animated musical that could delay their 11th album. The 12th and final record is expected to simply be titled Coldplay, though Martin hinted it might arrive “a year late.”

Even with the looming retirement, fans shouldn’t panic just yet. The band has promised to keep touring and working on creative projects together—just without new studio albums. Martin has also hinted their future may shift away from stadium spectacles, focusing instead on smaller shows and helping young artists, something he’s been passionate about throughout his career.

Still, not everyone in the group is convinced retirement will stick. Bassist Guy Berryman compared Martin’s plan to running a marathon: “If somebody said to you, ‘Start running and don’t stop,’ it’s quite hard to motivate yourself.” His comments suggest that Martin’s songwriting days may be far from over.

Adding to the uncertainty, Martin recently told a Wembley crowd that their tour “still has 138 dates left to go” and teased new 2027 shows—despite hints that this run was their last.

For now, it seems Coldplay’s “final chapter” is still being written. Whether the band truly stops after album 12 or finds new ways to keep going, fans can expect plenty more music and memories before they officially close the book.
