Van Dyke, 98, wins Creative Arts Emmy for variety special, dances on stage in celebration
Dick Van Dyke, the beloved actor and entertainer, made headlines once again on September 7, 2024, as he clinched the title of the oldest winner at the Creative Arts Emmys.
At the age of 98, Van Dyke won the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) for his birthday tribute special, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic.
The two-hour CBS special, which aired last December, was a heartfelt celebration of Van Dyke’s illustrious career. It combined archival footage with live performances, showcasing the highlights of his remarkable journey in entertainment.
Van Dyke’s latest win ties him with Norman Lear, who also won at 98 in 2020. Lear’s award was for his special Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and Good Times.
During his acceptance speech, Van Dyke was visibly thrilled and full of energy. “Thank you, that reception, I cannot tell you what it means,” he said. With a grin, he reminded the audience, “I’m 99 next month,” and demonstrated his agility with some lively dance moves.
The special also saw his wife, Arlene Silver, who was the producer of the show, joining him on stage. Van Dyke praised her, joking about nepotism but emphasizing her talent and dedication. “The young lady who got this award, you may think of the word nepotism and I would understand it, but this lady got the job all by herself,” he said. Arlene then expressed her gratitude, highlighting the love and effort they both put into the special.
In the press room, Van Dyke continued to express his disbelief and joy. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said, proudly declaring himself as “probably the oldest Emmy winner!” He offered some advice to aspiring talent, emphasizing perseverance and self-belief. “You have to stick with it. You’re gonna go through hard times and a lot of auditions… but you have to stay with it,” he advised.
Reflecting on his legacy, Van Dyke said he hopes to be remembered for bringing laughter and joy for 75 years. “I’ve been in the business 75 years. I can’t believe it, that I’m still here and performing,” he said. He even joked about his future job prospects, “I’m looking for work if anybody has!”
Earlier this year, Van Dyke also made history at the Daytime Emmy Awards, where he became the oldest winner in that category as well. He took home the award for Best Guest Performer in a Daytime Drama Series for his role on Days of Our Lives.
Van Dyke’s impressive achievements reflect his enduring talent and charisma. Even at 98, he continues to captivate audiences with his energy and humor.
The 2024 Creative Arts Emmys will air on September 14 at 8 p.m. ET on FXX and will be available for streaming on Hulu from September 15 through October 9.
