Eddie Murphy is stepping back into the shoes of Detroit detective Axel Foley in the latest installment of the Beverly Hills Cop series, titled “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” set to debut on Netflix on July 3.

The actor, now 63, reflected on his experience returning to the beloved role during an appearance on Today on Tuesday, June 18.

Murphy, who first portrayed Axel Foley in the original 1984 film when he was just 21, joked about the challenges of reprising such a physically demanding role four decades later.

“I did Beverly Hills Cop when I was 21, and I’m 63 now,” Murphy told Al Roker. “Now, I would rather not do any stunts. We were shooting something and the director said, ‘I want you to come out of this place and run down those steps.’

After we shot and he’s like, ‘Can you come down with more urgency? Faster?’ And I was like, ‘No!'”

Emphasizing his reluctance to engage in action scenes at his age, Murphy humorously compared himself to another seasoned actor.

“I was like, ‘I’m not doing anything action. Don’t call me unless you offer me the same kind of s— you would offer Morgan Freeman,'” he quipped.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” marks the fourth film in the franchise, following the original 1984 movie and its two sequels, released in 1987 and 1994.

The first film saw Murphy’s character, Axel Foley, a street-smart Detroit cop, traveling to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his childhood friend, played by James Russo.

The character of Axel Foley became an iconic role for Murphy, catapulting him to stardom.

Reflecting on the enduring popularity of the character, Murphy said, “Beverly Hills Cop was my first movie that I’m the lead in. If I travel overseas they call me Axel Foley.

Axel is an everyman. He’s not a superhero or a super-cop, he’s the everyman that rises to the occasion. I think that’s why people like it. And more than anything, he’s funny.”

In “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” Axel Foley is back with a mix of familiar faces and new characters. Franchise regulars Billy Rosewood, played by Judge Reinhold, and John Taggart, portrayed by John Ashton, return to the screen.

New additions include Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who play key roles in the plot.

According to the official synopsis, Axel Foley teams up with these new characters and his old pals after his daughter’s life is threatened, leading them to uncover a conspiracy.

Murphy had previously spoken about the physical demands of making the new film, especially at an older age.

In a November interview with PEOPLE, he noted, “I am not in my 20s anymore.” He added, “It was an action movie. So it was a rough one. But we got through it.”

Despite the physical challenges, Murphy’s excitement about the project and his return to the character of Axel Foley is palpable.
