Actor Robert De Niro‘s photo habits.

The famed director, known for “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” shared that De Niro, despite his status as one of the greatest actors of all time, uses a simple trick to perfect his smile in photos: he says “cheese.”

Apatow made this revelation during his discussion with actor Matthew Broderick on June 15.

Reflecting on his first time at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012, Apatow recounted an event celebrating Universal Studios’ milestone.

Although the gathering was supposed to feature other notable celebrities like Meryl Streep, it ended up being just him and De Niro.

“Now it’s the 100th anniversary of Universal Studios with Judd Apatow and Robert De Niro, which led to a very awkward Q&A because, you know, he’s talking about ‘Mean Streets.’

I’m talking about Steve Carell with a boner. It was really fun but really weird,” Apatow recalled, highlighting the amusing mismatch of their discussion topics.

During this event, Apatow noticed De Niro’s unusual habit of saying “cheese” before photos.

He humorously recounted, “And the whole time we’re taking photos, he goes like this, ‘Cheese!’ What is he doing? The best actor in the history of Earth has to say ‘cheese’ to create a smile.”

Years later, Apatow’s wife, actress Leslie Mann, who worked with De Niro on the 2016 film “The Comedian,” brought up the “cheese” habit with him.

She mentioned to De Niro that her husband had noticed him saying “cheese” during their photo session. De Niro’s response was simple and straightforward: “Yeah, I say cheese.”

De Niro’s participation in this year’s Tribeca Film Festival extended beyond amusing anecdotes. He caught up with Billy Crystal after the screening of their 1999 film “Analyze This” on June 14.

During a discussion with moderator Gayle King, De Niro shared his hopes for an “ideal” Father’s Day, expressing a desire to have all his children together.

The “Godfather II” star is a father to seven children: Drena, 56, Raphael, 47, twins Julian and Aaron, 28, Elliot, 26, Helen, 12, and Gia, 14 months.

“I just like to have us all together, you know,” De Niro said at New York’s The Indeed Theater at Spring Studios. “That’s the ideal, having them all together [on] Father’s Day.”

Earlier this month, De Niro opened up to “Today” about his experience raising his 14-month-old daughter Gia with his girlfriend Tiffany Chen. “I always say it’s pure joy. That’s it,” De Niro remarked, adding that he considers himself an “OK” dad.

When asked how he’s changed as a father over the years, De Niro suggested asking his older children for a more accurate assessment.

“Nothing is perfect in life as we all know, and my older kids, when they’re older, they’re more critical. When they’re young like the baby, that’s pure joy, so I’m enjoying that,” he explained.

The actor’s candid reflections provide a glimpse into his personal life, showcasing his dedication to his family despite his storied career.

His humorous “cheese” habit adds a light-hearted touch to his image, demonstrating that even the most accomplished individuals have their endearing quirks.

Apatow’s anecdote about De Niro’s photo routine highlights a relatable and charming side of the iconic actor.

It serves as a reminder that behind the serious roles and accolades, De Niro is someone who enjoys the simple pleasures in life, like capturing a perfect smile with a timeless trick.

As fans continue to admire his work on screen, stories like these offer a more personal connection to the man behind the legend.
