Kate Middleton and Prince William are extending their support to those affected by Hurricane Beryl, which recently ravaged parts of the Caribbean.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 42, have privately donated funds to assist the victims of the Category 4 hurricane that struck Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

PEOPLE has confirmed that the royal couple is closely monitoring the situation and has made contributions to aid recovery efforts.

The devastating hurricane has claimed at least ten lives as of Thursday, July 4. According to Reuters, the death toll has risen following Beryl’s destructive path through Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Initial reports on Wednesday, July 3, indicated that nine people had died, with three fatalities each in Grenada and Carriacou, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Venezuela.

The updated count highlights the storm’s severe impact on the region.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, King Charles expressed his deep sorrow over the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. “My family and I have been profoundly saddened to learn of the dreadful destruction caused by Hurricane Beryl across the Caribbean,” the King stated. “Above all, we send our heartfelt condolences to the friends and families of those who have so cruelly lost their lives.”

King Charles also commended the resilience and solidarity displayed by the Caribbean communities in the wake of the disaster.

“I have seen the extraordinary spirit of resilience and solidarity that people across the Caribbean have shown in response to such destruction — a spirit which has been called upon too often — and so I also send my particular gratitude to the emergency services and volunteers who are supporting the rescue and recovery efforts,” he added.

The King concluded his message by extending his thoughts and prayers to those whose lives and properties have been devastated.

Sources close to PEOPLE have revealed that King Charles will also make a charitable donation to support recovery and relief efforts in the affected regions.

He has requested regular updates on the developments and expressed a desire to speak with regional leaders to convey his sympathies and support personally.

As the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles maintains strong ties with the Caribbean. The Commonwealth website notes that 13 countries in the Caribbean and Americas are part of the Commonwealth.

Additionally, Charles serves as the head of state in Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Lucia.
