Kevin Costner, known for his legendary roles in Hollywood, reveals a lesser-known side of his life in an exclusive cover story with PEOPLE.

Despite his fame and success, Costner shares that his primary role is being a devoted father to his seven children, describing his family as his “anchor.”

In the latest issue, which celebrates PEOPLE’s 100 Reasons to Love America in 2024, Costner opens up about the everyday realities of fatherhood.

“I’m an Uber guy,” he says, highlighting his role in shuttling his younger children—Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 14—between various activities and commitments. These three children are from his marriage to his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.

“My life is driving up and down the freeway just trying to get the children where they think they need to be… but that’s part of the job,” Costner explains.

He emphasizes that, despite his Hollywood status, his daily life revolves around his kids’ schedules, making him no different from any other parent.

Costner’s parenting journey extends beyond his younger trio. He is also the father of four adult children: Annie, 40, Lily, 37, Joe, 36, and Liam, 26. Reflecting on his large family, he likens his children to “shooting stars,” each with their unique paths and needs.

Growing up in the Costner household has been filled with outdoor adventures. The family has spent countless hours surfing, spearfishing, and lobster diving along the Santa Barbara coastline.

Costner fondly recalls these activities, saying, “They surf, and they dive, and we spear fish…We use every inch of the ocean, and the property…It’s a perfect place for us.”

These cherished family moments underscore Costner’s commitment to ensuring that his children have a grounded and enriching upbringing. Despite his demanding career, he prioritizes his family, maintaining that they are the unwavering support system in his life.

“They know that I have this chosen work, but honestly, I’m really clear about where my responsibility absolutely lies at the end of the day,” Costner asserts.

When not engaged in family outings or chauffeuring duties, Costner finds ways to integrate his children into his professional world. His three older children appeared in his Oscar-winning film “Dances with Wolves,” creating lasting memories captured on film. “I’m locked in a 70-millimeter film with my children,” he reminisces. “Those were my home movies.”

Following in this tradition, his younger son, Hayes, makes his acting debut in Costner’s latest project, “Horizon: An American Saga.” This ambitious western film series also features a role for Joe in its third chapter.

For Hayes, working with his father on set was an invaluable bonding experience. “It felt like the greatest way that we could bond over something we both love and to create lasting memories together,” the teenager shares.

The father-son duo also treasures the quieter moments away from the spotlight, often embarking on fishing trips together.

Hayes describes these outings as opportunities to connect on a deeper level. “It’s more about spending time together and talking…It’s those quiet, peaceful moments that I cherish the most.”

As Costner navigates his busy life, balancing his responsibilities as a father and a filmmaker, he remains deeply rooted in his role as a parent. Whether it’s driving his kids to volleyball practice or casting them in his films, he ensures that his family remains at the heart of his world.

Costner’s story is a testament to the enduring importance of family, demonstrating that even in the midst of a high-profile career, the simple, everyday moments with loved ones are what truly matter.

His dedication to his children, both on and off the screen, underscores a universal truth: at the end of the day, it’s the bonds we share with family that provide the greatest fulfillment and joy.
