During her June 20 show at The Skagit Casino Resort in Washington, the 42-year-old singer experienced every performer’s nightmare: her front dental bridge popped right out in the middle of her 1996 hit “One Way Ticket.”
Mid-verse, Rimes paused and touched her mouth. “I feel something pop in my mouth,” she later explained in a candid Instagram video. Fans watched as she hurried offstage, visibly flustered.
But canceling wasn’t in her playbook. Instead, she regrouped, discreetly pushed the bridge back into place, and stormed back onto the stage to finish the set—bridge in hand, determination in her eyes.
“It literally was like this,” Rimes said, demonstrating how she held her teeth in place between lines of “Can’t Fight the Moonlight.” “There wasn’t a f—ing thing I could do about it except either walk off or just hold my teeth in and sing, so I just ran with it.”
That resilience isn’t new for Rimes, who’s been open about her dental ups and downs. After suffering from complications tied to botched dentistry—29 surgeries and ongoing pain—she famously sued her former dentist for malpractice in 2013.
Clearly, nothing fazes her now. In true show-must-go-on style, she quipped ahead of her second performance that night: “If you catch them, please return them,” warning the front-row crowd to keep an eye out for any runaway crowns.
Rimes even shut down any post-show sympathy tour. “The show can go on, even in the midst of sheer, utter embarrassment,” she laughed. “You just gotta be real with people.” And real she was—sharing both the cringe and the courage with fans who cheered her on through the hiccup.
