Mark Hamill says Carrie Fisher once told him to “embrace” being Luke Skywalker after he downplayed Star Wars in a Broadway playbill.

Mark Hamill is remembering some wise words from his late Star Wars co-star, Carrie Fisher.
In a recent interview on NPR’s Fresh Air, Hamill revealed that Fisher once encouraged him to stop downplaying his legendary role as Luke Skywalker.
She gave him the reality check during a visit to one of his Broadway performances. Hamill had purposely left Star Wars out of his playbill bio, opting instead to highlight his theater work. Fisher wasn’t having it.
“She goes, ‘What’s the deal? How come you don’t mention Star Wars?’” Hamill recalled. When he explained that he wanted the focus on his stage credits, Fisher bluntly told him, “‘Hey, get over yourself. You’re Luke Skywalker. I’m Princess Leia. Embrace it.’”
Hamill admitted the advice stuck with him, realizing that the iconic role was something no one else could claim: “What territory do I occupy that no one else does?”
Hamill, Fisher, and Harrison Ford (as Han Solo) made up the core trio of the original Star Wars trilogy, which launched in 1977 and became one of the most influential franchises in cinematic history.
Despite his pride in the series, Hamill says he has no plans to return to the role of Luke. “I had my time,” he said, adding that the franchise should now “focus on the future and all the new characters.”
Still, it’s clear he carries a deep appreciation for the galaxy far, far away—and for the friend who reminded him to never forget it.
