In a powerful display of unity and advocacy, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, graced the inaugural mental health summit organized by the GEANCO Foundation in Nigeria.

The couple’s visit to the Lightway Academy in Abuja marked the first stop of their Nigerian tour, where they passionately addressed the importance of mental health awareness and destigmatization.

Prince Harry, known for his candid discussions on mental health, delivered a heartfelt speech that resonated deeply with the audience. He emphasized the prevalence of mental health issues globally, highlighting the pervasive stigma surrounding them.

“In some cases around the world, in more than you would believe, there is a stigma when it comes to mental health,” Harry noted. “Too many people don’t want to talk about it because it’s invisible.”

Drawing parallels between physical and mental health, Harry urged the audience to prioritize self-care and destigmatize discussions around mental well-being.

“Every single person in this room has mental health,” he emphasized. “There is no shame in acknowledging that today is a bad day.”

Meghan Markle, equally passionate about mental health advocacy, echoed her husband’s sentiments during her speech.

She emphasized the importance of embracing one’s story, even on the hardest days. “Every single one of you has a story,” Meghan said. “There’s no shame in any single one of your stories.”

The Duchess shared a touching moment about her 2-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet, underscoring the interconnection between individuals and the importance of self-reflection.

“A few weeks ago, she looked at me and saw her reflection in my eyes. She said, ‘Mama, I see me in you,'” Meghan recounted. “As I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well.”

Meghan encouraged the audience to prioritize their mental health, emphasizing the need to speak openly about their struggles. “There is no need to suffer in silence,” she affirmed. “Just make sure that you are taking care of yourselves, and that begins with your mental health by really talking about whatever’s coming up for you.”

The royal couple’s visit to the Lightway Academy symbolized their commitment to empowering young minds and fostering open dialogue about mental health.

They were warmly welcomed by school director Joyce Agbese and CEO of GEANCO, as well as the school’s founder Oprah Adi.

Throughout the event, the Duchess of Sussex radiated elegance in a peach-colored maxi dress by Heidi Merrick, paired with Emma Parsons sandals, while Prince Harry complemented her in a matching beige ensemble.

The summit concluded with a message of hope and solidarity, as Meghan Markle extended birthday wishes to James Holt, the director of the couple’s Archewell Foundation.

“Just like that, we celebrate all the good stuff, and we are with each other even in the moments that are sad,” Meghan remarked.

The Duke and Duchess’s visit to Nigeria not only showcased their dedication to mental health advocacy but also celebrated the resilience and strength of the Nigerian community.

Their presence at the Lightway Academy served as a beacon of hope for individuals struggling with mental health challenges, inspiring them to seek support and embrace their stories.

As the royal couple continues their tour of Nigeria, their unwavering commitment to social causes and their genuine connection with communities around the world continue to make a profound impact, reminding us all of the power of empathy, compassion, and unity.
