Meredith thanks Kristen for support after losing Johnny and Matthew
Meredith Gaudreau, the wife of hockey player Johnny Gaudreau, has shared her gratitude for the support she has received after the heartbreaking death of her husband and his brother Matthew.
The two brothers died on August 29 when a car, driven by a person who may have been drinking, hit them while they were riding their bikes in New Jersey. This tragic event happened just one day before their sister Katie’s wedding.
On September 9, Meredith posted a message on Instagram thanking Kristen Hayes, the wife of another hockey player, Jimmy Hayes, for supporting her during this sad time. Kristen also lost her husband, Jimmy, in 2021, when he was just 31 years old, and she knows how hard it is to lose someone you love.
“We are members of a club no one wants to be in,” Meredith wrote, thanking Kristen for being there for her. Meredith shared Kristen’s post, where Kristen praised her for delivering a speech at Johnny’s funeral. Kristen had also given a speech at her husband Jimmy’s funeral and understood how difficult it was for Meredith to find the strength to speak.
“Some days I don’t know how we do it, but we do,” Kristen wrote. She wanted Meredith to know that all the feelings of sadness and grief are normal and that she is doing an amazing job, even though the pain is overwhelming.
Kristen, who is now remarried and raising her three children, said she was heartbroken when she heard about Johnny and Matthew’s death. When the news came out, she wrote on Instagram, “Unimaginable news this morning. Heartbroken. There are no words,” along with a broken heart emoji.

During Johnny Gaudreau’s funeral, Meredith made an emotional announcement—she is nine weeks pregnant with their third child. Meredith and Johnny already have two children: a seven-month-old son named Johnny, and a daughter, Noa, who will turn two in October.
In another emotional moment, Matthew Gaudreau’s wife, Madeline, spoke at the funeral and promised to always support Meredith and their children. Madeline is also pregnant with her and Matthew’s first baby.
Madeline said to Meredith, “I promise I will always be there for you and the kids, and that we will honor the lives of our husbands together, hand in hand.”
The loss of Johnny and Matthew has been devastating for their family and for the hockey community. Now, Meredith and Madeline are leaning on each other, their family, and friends to get through this difficult time. Both women have shared that they will keep the memory of their husbands alive and will raise their children with love, surrounded by the support of those who care for them.
