Meryl Streep, the iconic actress renowned for her unparalleled talent and numerous accolades, celebrates a significant milestone today as she turns 75.

The three-time Oscar winner continues to shine in Hollywood while balancing her personal life as a mother and grandmother.

Streep’s journey in the entertainment industry began with her breakthrough role in 1978’s “The Deer Hunter,” which earned her the first of a record 21 Oscar nominations.

Since then, she has become a household name, captivating audiences with performances in films like “Sophie’s Choice,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” and “Mamma Mia!”

Beyond her illustrious career, Streep’s personal life reveals a devoted family woman. She shares four children with her husband of over four decades, sculptor Don Gummer.

Their children — Henry, 44, Mamie, 40, Grace, 38, and Louisa, 33 — have grown up under the shadow of their mother’s fame yet remain relatively private.

Streep and Gummer, who married in 1978, announced in October 2023 that they had been separated for more than six years.

A representative for Streep confirmed the separation, emphasizing that while they continue to care for each other, they have chosen to live apart. Despite this change in their relationship, Streep’s dedication to her family remains evident.

During the years of their separation, Streep has embraced her role as a grandmother to five.

Henry and his wife, Tamryn, have a son and a daughter; Mamie and her husband, Mehar Sethi, also share a son and a daughter; and Grace, married to music producer Mark Ronson, welcomed a daughter in 2023.

Streep’s joy in being a grandmother has surfaced occasionally in interviews. In a 2019 conversation with the late Glenda Jackson for Interview magazine, Streep humorously discussed her excitement about Mamie’s then-expected child, joking about her tendency to offer unsolicited advice.

More recently, at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Streep reflected on her busy life during a “Rendez-Vous with Meryl Streep” event, expressing that her time is often divided between her career and her family.

“It’s a crowded life,” Streep remarked. “But I signed up for that, and that’s what I have.” Despite her demanding schedule, she remains committed to her family, indicating that her home life is filled with the chaos and joy of having children and grandchildren.

Streep has long maintained a balance between her high-profile career and her family life. In a 2008 interview with Good Housekeeping, she spoke about the challenges of juggling motherhood, marriage, and a rewarding career, calling it “the best kind of challenge.”

Her commitment to privacy in her personal life was influenced by advice from Robert Redford, her co-star in 1985’s “Out of Africa.”

Redford taught her the importance of keeping family life private, a principle Streep has adhered to throughout her career.

As her children have grown and started families of their own, Streep’s career has evolved. While she remains a powerful presence in Hollywood, she has shifted more towards television roles in recent years.

After her last Oscar-nominated performance in 2017’s “The Post,” Streep took on notable television roles in series like “Big Little Lies” in 2019, an episode of “Extrapolations” in 2022, and her current role in the popular Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building.”

In the fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building,” set to premiere on August 27, Streep will reprise her role as actress Loretta Durkin, joining a star-studded cast that includes Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and her “It’s Complicated” co-star Steve Martin.

Her performance in the show’s third season has garnered critical acclaim, potentially leading to an Emmy nomination, a fitting belated birthday gift for the celebrated actress.

Throughout her storied career, Streep has continually proven her versatility and talent, earning her place as one of the most respected figures in the entertainment industry.

Her ability to balance her professional and personal life is a testament to her dedication and resilience. As she celebrates her 75th birthday, Meryl Streep remains an enduring icon, whose legacy in film and television is matched only by her role as a loving mother and grandmother.
