Spurlock’s family announced his death on Friday, May 24, 2024, noting that he died the previous day in New York due to complications from cancer.

Morgan Spurlock rose to prominence with the release of “Super Size Me” in 2004, a provocative documentary that delved into the health impacts of fast food.

In the film, Spurlock undertook a daring challenge: to eat only McDonald’s meals for an entire month. The film meticulously documented the adverse effects on his health, shedding light on the broader issues of the fast food industry and its impact on society.

“Super Size Me” earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature, cementing Spurlock’s reputation as a bold and creative filmmaker.

Following the success of “Super Size Me,” Spurlock continued to produce thought-provoking documentaries.

His subsequent works include “Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden?” (2008), which humorously and insightfully explored the search for the notorious terrorist leader, and “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” (2011), a meta-documentary about product placement in films.

In 2017, he released “Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!,” a sequel that examined the fast food industry’s response to consumer demands for healthier options.

Spurlock’s career was not without controversy. In December 2017, during the height of the #MeToo movement, Spurlock published an essay admitting to past inappropriate behavior and acknowledging that he had been “part of the problem.”

He revealed that he had settled a sexual harassment allegation made by an assistant. This admission led to a period of reflection and sobriety for Spurlock, who sought to make amends for his past actions.

In a 2019 interview with Deadline, Spurlock discussed his efforts to address his behavior and make positive changes in his life. “I’ve tried to make right with my family, and to make amends, to people over the years that I felt like I should’ve treated better along the way.

That’s a big part of the journey, right now,” he said. Spurlock expressed hope that his continued efforts and personal growth would help him be on “the right side” of his past transgressions.

Spurlock’s death has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from family, friends, and fans. His brother, Craig Spurlock, issued a heartfelt statement, saying, “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan.
