Prince William shared an update about Princess Kate Middleton’s health during an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings on June 5.

As the Princess of Wales continues her cancer treatment, she remains out of the public eye.

At the event, a veteran asked Prince William if Kate was “getting better.” Prince William, 41, responded, “She’d have loved to be here,” according to Hello! magazine.

Princess Kate, 42, announced her diagnosis and ongoing chemotherapy on March 22. Since then, she has been absent from public engagements.

The news came following a January announcement from Kensington Palace that she had planned abdominal surgery. In a self-written speech, Kate expressed her intention to return to her royal duties when her health allows.

“We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment,” Princess Kate said in a video filmed in the garden of Windsor Castle, near her home at Adelaide Cottage.

She lives there with Prince William and their three children: Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. “My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”

Although Princess Kate has kept a low profile in the weeks following her announcement, sources tell PEOPLE she has been seen out with her family and running errands on her own.

Prince William also took time off from his royal duties to support his wife, returning to work in mid-April.

During a visit to the Isles of Scilly on May 10, hospital administrator Tracy Smith asked Prince William about Princess Kate’s well-being.

“She’s doing well, thank you,” he replied. Smith continued, asking about the children, to which William responded, “The children are very jealous that I’m here and that they’re not here as well.”

The Isles of Scilly are a cherished vacation spot for the royal family. William, Kate, and their children have been seen biking around Tresco, continuing a tradition from William’s childhood when he visited the islands with Princess Diana, the future King Charles, and Prince Harry.

Prince William has continued to attend public events since returning to his duties. He brought Prince George to two soccer matches following the announcement of Kate’s diagnosis, attending games together on April 11 and May 25.

On June 5, Prince William joined King Charles and Queen Camilla for the first of many engagements marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

The royals are set to attend events in France on June 6. This trip marks King Charles’s first overseas visit since his cancer diagnosis in February and his subsequent return to public duties in late April.

Prince William is scheduled to attend the Canadian commemorative ceremony at the Juno Beach Centre and the international commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach. There, he will join over 25 heads of state and veterans in honoring the historic anniversary.

The royal family has faced a challenging period with both Princess Kate and King Charles dealing with health issues. However, they have continued to fulfill their royal duties while providing updates on their health.

Princess Kate’s absence from public life has been felt by many, but her focus remains on recovery. Her announcement highlighted the importance of family and privacy during this difficult time.

Prince William’s recent comments about Kate’s condition have provided reassurance to the public. Despite the challenges, he has expressed that his wife is “doing well,” which offers hope and encouragement.

As the royal family continues to navigate these personal challenges, they remain committed to their public roles and the causes they support.

The upcoming commemorative events for the D-Day Landings underscore the royal family’s dedication to honoring significant historical moments and the sacrifices made by those who served.

Princess Kate’s journey through cancer treatment serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength required during such times. Her message of hope and determination to return to her work reflects her commitment to her role and the causes she champions.

The royal family’s transparency about their health challenges has allowed the public to share in their journey, offering support and well-wishes. As Princess Kate focuses on her recovery, the nation waits in anticipation for her return to public life and the continuation of her impactful work.
