Netflix has officially renewed the hit series Supacell for a second season. The show, created by Rapman, has made waves since its debut, becoming one of Netflix’s most successful UK-based series in recent memory. The renewal was announced by Netflix through a post on X, reflecting the show’s strong global performance and continued presence in the platform’s top 10 lists.
Supacell is set in modern-day South London and follows the lives of five ordinary Black individuals who discover they have superpowers. These newfound abilities are tied to a shared family history of sickle cell disease, an element that adds depth and uniqueness to the storyline. However, their powers also attract the attention of a secret organization, which seeks to control them, creating tension and danger for the group.
The series has resonated with audiences worldwide, not only for its engaging plot but also for its strong representation and portrayal of Black culture in a contemporary setting. Rapman, known for his work on Blue Story, has crafted a story that blends the superhero genre with real-world issues, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.
The cast, known as the Supacell Six, includes Tosin Cole, Jessica Magaye, Ricardo McCleary-Campbell, Saraphina Mattis, Melissa Simon-Hartman, Cleo Young, and Micheal Ademilua. Their performances have been widely praised, contributing significantly to the show’s success.
Sebastian Thiel directed the series, while Mark Hedges served as the series producer. Sheila Nortley took on the role of Block2 producer and associate producer, with Geraldine Hawkins as co-producer. Rapman also served as an executive producer, alongside Anna Ferguson and Steve Searle for Netflix. Mouktar Mohammed from New Wave was also an executive producer, with Henrietta Lee as an associate producer.
