Fans of The Sex Lives of College Girls can rest assured that they haven’t seen the last of Leighton, played by Reneé Rapp. According to series co-creator Justin Noble, Leighton will return for several episodes in the upcoming third season to wrap up her storyline.

News of Rapp’s departure from the popular Max dramedy first emerged last year, with reports indicating she would no longer be a series regular. Instead, Rapp, who is also a singer-songwriter, will appear in a limited number of episodes to give her character, Leighton, a proper send-off.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Noble hinted that Leighton’s journey is far from over. “She definitely still has some lessons and room to grow ahead of her,” he said. “She’ll be faced with a couple of big choices and she’ll have to make a couple of big decisions in all aspects of her life.”

Leighton’s storyline in the previous season included significant personal milestones, such as coming out to her father, leaving her sorority, and rekindling a past relationship. Noble’s comments suggest her character’s arc will continue to explore these themes and more, ensuring her exit isn’t abrupt. Season 3 will see the four main characters, including Leighton, facing major turning points as they enter their sophomore year at Essex College.

Reflecting on the show’s narrative choices, Noble shared, “[Co-creator] Mindy [Kaling], myself, and the writers, we definitely chose chaos at the end of Season 2. Relationships in college go through real struggles, and it’s a time to learn about setting boundaries and figuring out personal needs in friendships and other relationships.”

The Sex Lives of College Girls is set at the fictional Essex College in New England, focusing on the lives of four roommates navigating their first year of university. The show stars Alyah Chanelle Scott, Pauline Chalamet, and Amrit Kaur, depicting a mix of relationship drama, the challenges of fitting in, academic stress, and the wild world of frat parties.

Since her debut on the show, Reneé Rapp has been making waves in the music industry. Her debut album, Snow Angel, released last summer through Interscope, debuted at No. 44 on the Billboard 200. Rapp also made her Broadway debut in Mean Girls as Regina George in 2019, a role she will reprise in the musical film adaptation in 2024.

The upcoming season of The Sex Lives of College Girls, a hit for Max, will introduce new characters played by Devin Craig (Queen Sugar), Ruby Cruz (Bottoms), Michael Provost (Insatiable), and Roby Attal (Haunting of Bly Manor). Mia Rodgers and Gracie Lawrence will join as series regulars, with recurring appearances from Nabeel Muscatwalla, Rebecca Wisocky, and Michael Hsu.
