Tony Goldwyn, known for his multifaceted career as an actor and director, recently shared his admiration for Robert De Niro’s parenting skills.

Goldwyn, who worked closely with De Niro on the upcoming film Ezra, highlighted the legendary actor’s loving relationship with his children, particularly his preteen daughter, Helen Grace.

De Niro, 80, has long been celebrated for his cinematic prowess, but Goldwyn’s comments shed light on another significant role he plays—that of a devoted father.

Goldwyn, 64, described De Niro’s relationship with his daughter Helen Grace, who is now 12 or 13 years old, as “beautiful to see.” Reflecting on his experiences during the filming of Ezra, Goldwyn noted Helen’s frequent presence on set.

“She was around a lot,” he recalled. “It was really beautiful to see how Bob is with her. She was, I guess, 10 or 11 when we filmed, so now she’s 12 or 13. But they have the most dear relationship.”

This bond, Goldwyn observed, seemed to enhance De Niro’s performance as a grandfather in the film, allowing him to draw from his real-life experiences as a father.

De Niro’s dedication to his children extends beyond Helen Grace. The actor has seven children from various relationships. He shares Helen Grace and her older brother, Elliot, 26, with his ex-wife, Grace Hightower.

His eldest children, Drena, 52, and Raphael, 47, are from his first marriage to Diahnne Abbott. Additionally, De Niro has twin sons, Julian and Aaron, 28, from his former relationship with model and actress Toukie Smith.

In April 2023, De Niro welcomed his youngest child, Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro, with his girlfriend, Tiffany Chen.

Despite his extensive career, De Niro’s family remains a central part of his life. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, De Niro shared his joy in spending quality time with his children.

“My favorite thing to do with my children is just being together, taking trips to warm places,” he said. “The fact that they’d all be together is everything to me.”

De Niro’s commitment to his family is further exemplified by his advice to his children and grandchildren. Emphasizing the importance of pursuing their dreams, De Niro has consistently encouraged them to strive for their goals without fear.

“For my kids, I tell them, ‘If you want to be an actor or you want to do this or that, that’s fine as long as you’re happy. Just don’t sell yourself short,'” he told PEOPLE in January 2020. “That’s the most I would say—push yourself a little more and reach for what you really think it is you want to do. Don’t be afraid.”

This nurturing approach resonates with his portrayal in Ezra, where he plays a grandfather to an 11-year-old boy. Goldwyn observed that De Niro’s real-life interactions with Helen Grace infused authenticity into his on-screen role.

“It was very interesting because he was playing, in our story, a grandfather to the 11-year-old boy Ezra… and so much of [his relationship with Helen], I feel, influenced his relationship with Ezra,” Goldwyn noted. “It was a very beautiful thing.”

Goldwyn’s admiration for De Niro extends beyond his parenting. As a colleague, Goldwyn was impressed by De Niro’s dedication and talent.

Working together on Ezra, which blends comedy and drama, allowed Goldwyn to witness firsthand De Niro’s multifaceted skills and his ability to bring depth to his roles.

The film, set to release on May 31, promises to showcase De Niro’s dynamic range as an actor, further cementing his status as one of Hollywood’s greats.

As Ezra hits theaters, audiences will not only see a compelling performance by De Niro but also catch glimpses of the genuine love and devotion he brings to his real-life role as a father.

Tony Goldwyn’s reflections offer a heartfelt glimpse into the personal life of a man who has captivated audiences for decades, highlighting that behind the iconic roles and accolades lies a devoted father who cherishes his family above all.
