Tory Lanez’s wife, Raina Nancy Chassagne, has filed for divorce, ending their marriage after less than a year.

This development comes as Lanez serves a 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Court documents obtained by PEOPLE on June 10 reveal that Chassagne, who tied the knot with Lanez on June 25, 2023, listed June 1, 2024, as the date of their separation. She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for seeking a divorce.

In her filing, Chassagne is seeking both legal and physical custody of their 7-year-old son, Kai’lon Peterson.

The documents do not request spousal support but leave room for future determination by the court. No assets or debts were listed concerning separate or quasi-community property.

Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence following his conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, in the feet in July 2020.

The incident occurred after a dispute involving Lanez, Megan, and her former assistant and ex-friend Kelsey Harris, after leaving a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s Los Angeles home.

The rapper’s legal troubles have been widely publicized, and his attempts to intimidate Megan Thee Stallion throughout the legal process have drawn significant attention.

In a statement released in August, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón highlighted Lanez’s pattern of behavior aimed at silencing Megan.

Gascón praised Megan for her bravery and resilience during the investigation and court proceedings.

“Over the past three years, Mr. Peterson has engaged in a pattern of conduct that was intended to intimidate Ms. Pete and silence her truths from being heard,” Gascón stated.

He further commended Megan for enduring months of probing investigation and court appearances where she had to relive her trauma amidst intense public scrutiny.

Megan Thee Stallion, 29, expressed her distress in a statement read by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta. She revealed the deep psychological impact the incident had on her, stating, “I struggle with being present.

After everything that occurred I cannot bring myself back to being in the same room with Tory. I’ve been tormented and terrorized.”

Megan also accused Lanez of attempting to manipulate public perception by paying bloggers to spread false information about the incident.

“He treated my trauma like a joke when I could’ve been dead,” she wrote, adding that Lanez blamed various external factors for his actions, including his childhood trauma.

The court proceedings have been fraught with complications. In September 2023, Lanez was denied bail by Judge David Herriford, who cited the violent nature of Lanez’s felony conviction and his history of violating court orders.

The judge also noted Lanez’s risk of deportation due to his Canadian citizenship and past violations of protective orders.

Chassagne’s divorce filing marks another chapter in Lanez’s tumultuous personal and legal saga. Despite their recent marriage, the strain of Lanez’s incarceration and the surrounding controversies appears to have taken a toll on their relationship.

As Lanez continues to serve his sentence, Chassagne’s priority is securing custody of their son, Kai’lon. The court documents indicate that she is focused on her son’s well-being, seeking both legal and physical custody to provide stability during this challenging period.

Efforts to contact Lanez’s current legal representation were unsuccessful, and PEOPLE also reached out to Lanez’s family for comments but received no immediate response.

The divorce filing adds another layer of complexity to Lanez’s life, which has been overshadowed by legal battles and public disputes.

The impact of these events on his family, particularly his young son, underscores the far-reaching consequences of his actions.

As the legal proceedings move forward, the focus will likely remain on how the court navigates custody and support matters, ensuring that Kai’lon’s needs are adequately addressed.

Meanwhile, Chassagne’s decision to file for divorce signals her intent to move forward and create a stable environment for her son, separate from the tumultuous circumstances surrounding Lanez.

This story continues to unfold, with public interest remaining high due to the high-profile nature of the individuals involved and the gravity of the charges against Lanez.
