Kate Middleton and Prince William, have expressed their profound sorrow following the tragic death of an RAF pilot in a Spitfire crash. The fatal incident occurred on Saturday, May 25, near RAF Coningsby, involving a World War II-era Spitfire fighter plane belonging to the esteemed Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).

The Prince and Princess of Wales promptly addressed the nation via a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), reflecting the gravity of the loss and their deep empathy for the pilot’s family and colleagues.

“Incredibly sad to hear of the news this afternoon from RAF Coningsby. Our thoughts this evening are with the pilot’s loved ones, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and the wider RAF family,” read their message, signed “W & C” (William and Catherine).

The following day, on Sunday, May 26, RAF Group Captain Robbie Lees, Commander Display Air Wing, issued an official statement, confirming the identity of the deceased pilot as Squadron Leader Mark Long.

“It is with great sorrow that I must confirm the death of Squadron Leader Mark Long,” Lees declared. He described Long as a cherished friend, a respected colleague, and a passionate aviator, whose loss would be deeply felt across the RAF community.

Squadron Leader Mark Long was a highly regarded Typhoon pilot at RAF Coningsby and had served with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for the past four years.

His role in piloting the historic aircraft was both a professional honor and a personal passion. Group Captain Lees emphasized Long’s dedication and the significant void his passing leaves within the RAF and among his peers.

In his statement, Lees also confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the crash is in progress.

“The RAF will not be offering any comment on the accident until that investigation has concluded, and likewise, we ask others not to speculate,” he added, underscoring the need for patience and respect during this period of uncertainty.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ message of condolence is deeply rooted in their longstanding connection with the RAF.

Prince William himself served as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot, stationed at RAF Valley in Anglesey, Wales, from 2010 to 2013. This personal experience lends a profound sincerity to their tribute.

In August 2023, Prince William was appointed Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Valley, further solidifying his bond with the RAF.

Princess Kate, in a similar vein, was named Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Coningsby. This role continues a legacy of royal affiliation with the RAF, as Prince William was previously appointed Honorary Air Commandant at RAF Coningsby by the late Queen Elizabeth in 2008, a role Princess Kate assumed last year.

The tragedy has reverberated throughout the RAF and the broader military community. The swift response of RAF personnel and emergency services was acknowledged by Group Captain Lees, who extended his gratitude for their efforts during the immediate aftermath of the crash.

His closing remarks reiterated the profound sympathy extended to Squadron Leader Long’s family and friends, requesting privacy for them during this distressing time.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, to which Squadron Leader Long was dedicated, plays a crucial role in commemorating the bravery and sacrifices of those who served during World War II.

The Spitfire, an iconic aircraft of that era, symbolizes resilience and heroism. The loss of a pilot in such an aircraft is a somber reminder of the risks faced by those who preserve this legacy through demonstration flights and memorial events.

As the investigation into the accident proceeds, the RAF community, along with the Prince and Princess of Wales, continues to honor Squadron Leader Mark Long’s memory.

His dedication to his duty and his contributions to the heritage of the RAF will not be forgotten. In their roles as Honorary Air Commodores, Prince William and Princess Kate are poised to support the RAF through this period of mourning, exemplifying the compassion and solidarity that has defined their public service.

In the wake of this tragedy, the nation stands united in grief and gratitude, honoring a life dedicated to preserving the legacy of courage and service that defines the Royal Air Force.
