Mamie Laverock, known for her role in “When Calls the Heart,” has shown signs of improvement following a severe accident where she fell five stories from a hospital balcony.

The 19-year-old actress recently opened her eyes for the first time since the incident, providing a glimmer of hope for her recovery.

This update comes after Laverock’s parents, Rob and Nicole, revealed that she had undergone multiple extensive surgeries and was on life support.

Nicole Laverock, Mamie’s mother, expressed cautious optimism about her daughter’s progress in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

“Let’s just hope this is the turnaround and she’s going to get through this now,” Nicole said. She also thanked the public for their outpouring of support, adding, “I couldn’t be happier that people reached out and cared. The story will be told.”

Details about the extent of Laverock’s injuries remain sparse, but Nicole described her daughter’s condition as being in “tremendous pain” after her body was “shattered” from the fall.

Despite this, Mamie has shown some responsiveness, such as squeezing her mother’s hand, although she still requires sedation to aid in her recovery.

The incident occurred on May 26 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. Nicole Laverock has asserted that the fall was not intentional and has placed blame on the hospital for what she believes was a failure in safety protocols.

The family is contemplating legal action against the hospital, stating that Mamie’s fall was not a suicide attempt and emphasizing the need for accountability.

“This is an absolute miracle and there will be accountability,” Nicole insisted. “All we care about is that Mamie can make a recovery and that she’s alive and that she’s fighting and that she’s strong. It’s unbelievable that she’s with us.”

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Providence Health Care, which operates St. Paul’s Hospital, declined to comment on specific patient matters due to privacy and confidentiality policies.

However, the spokesperson did note that in cases involving patient safety, an internal critical incident review is conducted to understand what happened and to recommend improvements for patient safety.

“Our hearts go out to the patient, family, and all affected by this event, and offer our best wishes for a full recovery,” the spokesperson added.

The series of events leading to the fall began on May 11, when Mamie was taken to a hospital in Winnipeg by her mother due to a medical emergency. She was later transferred to the Vancouver hospital, where the fall occurred.

According to an update on the family’s GoFundMe campaign, Mamie was being escorted out of a secure unit of the hospital and was taken to a balcony walkway from which she fell.

The GoFundMe campaign, initiated by Mamie’s parents, has detailed the severity of her condition, describing her injuries as life-threatening. “We are all devastated, in shock, at this intensely difficult time,” they wrote.

The news of Mamie’s fall has deeply affected her colleagues and fans. A spokesperson for Hallmark Media shared their sorrow with PEOPLE: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news about Mamie.

As a beloved member of our When Calls the Heart community, we wish her and her family peace, comfort, and many prayers during this difficult time.”

Erin Krakow, Mamie’s co-star on “When Calls the Heart,” has been among the vocal supporters of the family’s GoFundMe campaign.

Krakow shared an update on her Instagram Stories on June 3, expressing gratitude on behalf of Mamie’s family for the community’s support. “Mamie’s family has asked me to share their immense gratitude with all of you,” she wrote.

“Mamie’s road to recovery is long from over, but after falling 5 flights she is miraculously on the mend.”

Krakow also mentioned that there would be no further updates for the time being as the family focuses on Mamie’s healing. The GoFundMe campaign, however, remains active to assist with the mounting medical expenses.

Mamie Laverock’s acting career began with a role in the 2012 film “This Means War,” starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Tom Hardy. Although her improvised appearance was ultimately cut, she described the experience as “unbelievable.”

On “When Calls the Heart,” she portrayed nursing student Rosaleen Sullivan during the show’s first two seasons, earning a Young Artists Award in 2015 for her performance. Laverock reprised her role in 2023 for the show’s 10th season.

“When Calls the Heart” continues to air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on the Hallmark Channel, with fans and colleagues alike hoping for Mamie Laverock’s full recovery and return to the screen.
