As Heated Rivalry continues to build momentum after its season one finale, the hockey romance series is proving to be more than just a fan favorite — it’s becoming a quiet lifeline for people living in secrecy at the highest levels of professional sports.

Hudson Williams, who plays Montreal Metros star Shane Hollander in the Crave/HBO Max series, recently shared that the show has sparked deeply personal reactions from athletes who are still closeted.

Speaking on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Williams revealed that he has received “lovely anonymous emails” from professional players across major sports leagues.

“These are the ones that really stay with you,” Williams said, explaining that many messages come from athletes who aren’t publicly out and feel safer remaining anonymous. He noted hearing from hockey, football, and basketball players who see parts of their own lives reflected in the show’s story.

Rather than reaching out directly, some athletes contact Heated Rivalry author Rachel Reid, whose Game Changers novels inspired the series. Reid then passes along the messages to Williams. Others, he added, find quiet ways to connect through private social media accounts.

For Williams, those messages underscore the show’s emotional weight. While Heated Rivalry is often praised for its romance and chemistry — following the secret, years-long love story between Shane and rival player Ilya (played by Connor Storrie) — it also taps into the fear, pressure, and isolation many athletes still experience.

“It reminds you this isn’t just entertainment,” Williams shared. “It’s celebratory, but it’s also hitting people right where it hurts.”

Series creator Jacob Tierney has also spoken about the show’s widening impact. Following the show’s season two renewal, Tierney told Deadline that Heated Rivalry resonates far beyond the LGBTQ community.

“There are so many audiences here,” Tierney said. “Queer people, allies, families, friends — everyone’s finding something in it.”

That broad connection may explain why Heated Rivalry has struck such a nerve. In a sports world where coming out can still feel risky, the series offers something rare: a hopeful, human story that doesn’t look away from reality.

For Williams, knowing the show has reached people who need it most has become the most meaningful part of the experience. “Those messages,” he said, “are the ones that tell you this story matters.”
