Nicki Minaj’s Trump Turn: Rap Star’s Gold Card Moment Ignites Backlash and a National Immigration Debate

Nicki Minaj’s public embrace of Donald Trump has set off a firestorm, mixing celebrity politics, immigration and fan backlash.

Nicki Minaj is no stranger to commanding attention, but her latest appearance in Washington, DC, has pushed her into the center of a heated national conversation.

The rapper, born in Trinidad and Tobago, publicly declared herself Donald Trump’s “number one fan” while appearing on stage with the president and showing off what she described as a Trump “gold card” visa.

The moment, shared widely online, marked a sharp turn for an artist who once criticized Trump-era immigration policies. Smiling onstage, Minaj praised Trump’s leadership and voiced support for his proposed “Trump Accounts,” a program that would create trust funds for children.

Trump, in turn, joked with the crowd and held Minaj’s hand as another speaker stepped forward.

Soon after, Minaj posted images of the gold-colored card on X, captioning the thread simply: “Welp.” In a follow-up post, she said she was finalizing citizenship paperwork and claimed the card was provided “free of charge.” The card, bearing Trump’s image, is part of a fast-track residency program launched in December for wealthy immigrants.

According to the proposal, applicants pay $1 million plus a processing fee in exchange for U.S. residency and a pathway to citizenship. While Minaj’s card grants her the right to live in the U.S., it does not make her a citizen.

For many fans, the announcement was jarring. In past years, Minaj openly spoke about coming to the U.S. as a child without legal status and expressed deep concern over family separation at the border.

In a 2018 Facebook post, she described the fear immigrant children might feel when separated from their parents, calling the policy “so scary.”

As recently as 2024, Minaj told TikTok viewers she was still not a U.S. citizen, despite living in the country for decades and paying millions in taxes. Her recent praise of Trump has left some supporters confused and disappointed, especially amid ongoing protests over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The political climate surrounding immigration has only intensified. Public anger has grown following fatal shootings involving ICE agents, and musicians across genres have responded with protest and criticism. Bruce Springsteen released a song this week dedicated to victims Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, calling the situation “state terror.”

Ice-T has altered lyrics during live shows to protest ICE, warning that tensions are heading toward “ugly terrain.”

Other artists, including Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande, have also spoken out online, condemning ICE raids and calling for accountability.

Minaj, however, appears unfazed by the backlash. Onstage, she said criticism only strengthens her support for Trump and insisted she would not allow his opponents to “bully him.”

Whether seen as a bold personal stance or a shocking political pivot, Minaj’s appearance has once again shown how celebrity voices can amplify — and complicate — America’s most divisive debates.
