Award-winning actor and singer Billy Porter is speaking openly about the frightening medical emergency that nearly took his life, describing the experience as a moment that changed everything.

During a recent appearance on the podcast Outlaws hosted by Ts Madison, Porter shared that complications from an infection escalated so quickly that he briefly died while doctors fought to save him.

“I was dead for three days,” Porter said during the emotional conversation. “I am a miracle. I’m a walking miracle.”

The Tony and Emmy winner’s health struggles first became public in September 2025 when the Broadway production of Cabaret ended its run earlier than planned after Porter stepped away to recover from what producers described as a “serious case of sepsis.”

According to Porter, the problem started months earlier while he was performing in London’s West End production of Cabaret earlier in the year. What began as a urinary tract infection gradually became more serious despite several rounds of antibiotics.

After returning to the United States to begin rehearsals for the Broadway version of the show, the pain returned—this time far worse.

By the time Porter checked himself into the hospital, doctors discovered that a kidney stone had become trapped in his urethra. The blockage caused urine and infection to build up behind it.

Doctors inserted a stent to redirect the urine and attempted to treat the infection. But once they began treating the blockage, the infection rapidly spread.

“When they got in there, there was so much infection behind the stone,” Porter explained. Within minutes, he went into urosepsis, a severe form of sepsis that occurs when a urinary tract infection spreads into the bloodstream.

Porter was placed on life support as doctors worked to stabilize him.

While he was in a coma, another serious complication developed. His leg went into compartment syndrome, a condition in which swelling cuts off oxygen to muscles.

Surgeons had to perform emergency procedures on his leg, leaving the surgical area open for two days in order to save it.

Despite the life-threatening ordeal, Porter says he now feels immense gratitude.

“I’m so grateful to be here,” he said. “It is such a gift.”

In December, Porter shared an update with fans on social media, explaining that he was still recovering but steadily improving after what he described as a very challenging four months.

Medical experts note that urosepsis is a dangerous complication of a urinary tract infection that requires immediate treatment. If bacteria from the infection enter the bloodstream, the body’s response can trigger widespread inflammation and organ failure.

For Porter, surviving the crisis has given him a new outlook.

After months of treatment and recovery, the performer says he is focused on healing—and thankful simply to still be alive.
