Kate Winslet is set to enter Middle-earth as Andy Serkis assembles a powerhouse cast for the most anticipated fantasy film of 2027.

For Andy Serkis, “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” was never just another sequel.
It was a chance to return to the role that defined a generation of filmmaking — and now, he’s building something worthy of that legacy.
The latest name attached to the project is Kate Winslet, who is currently in talks to join the film. Serkis is both directing and reprising his iconic role as Gollum, the tormented creature whose obsession with the One Ring sits at the heart of Tolkien’s story.
Winslet comes straight off James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” making Middle-earth her next destination.
She isn’t coming alone. Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are rumored to return as Frodo and Gandalf — beloved faces that audiences haven’t seen on the big screen together in over two decades.
What makes this feel different from a standard Hollywood reboot is who’s guiding it. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — the trio who built Middle-earth the first time — are back as producers. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav publicly promised they’d be “involved every step of the way.”
That kind of creative continuity is rare, and fans are paying attention.
The story itself fills a gap fans have wondered about for years: the period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Set for release December 17, 2027, it drops right into the heart of the holiday movie season.
There’s noise in the background about Warner Bros.’ potential sale to Paramount Skydance, which could shake up the studio’s broader plans. But this franchise? It’s bulletproof.
The original “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies each grossed roughly $2.8 billion worldwide. Nobody’s touching this one.
For Serkis, it’s also a reunion with Peter Jackson — the director who first gave Gollum his soul back in 1994’s “Heavenly Creatures,” casting a young Winslet. Three decades later, the circle closes.
