April 4 episode of Saturday Night Live featured Jack Black as host for the fifth time. With this, he officially entered the show’s exclusive “Five-Timers Club.” Several comedy stars made cameo appearances during his monologue to celebrate the moment.
The monologue began with the arrival of Jonah Hill, who told Black that something seemed wrong with the Five-Timers Club. The two entered a lounge that had shown up in past bits, but this time it was covered in cobwebs.
Inside the lounge, Tina Fey welcomed Black. She joked that he was the first Black member of the Five-Timers Club, a remark that playfully referenced the show’s often-criticized lack of racial diversity. However, Dwayne Johnson had previously become the first Black five-timer in 2017, while most other members have been white.
Black questioned the condition of the lounge, to which Fey responded that it had seen better days. She explained that the concept originally started as a one-time joke in a monologue by Tom Hanks, but had been reused so many times that it lost its original charm. Fey also noted that this marked her fifth appearance in the Five-Timers Club segment.
Then, Candice Bergen entered and cracked a joke. She was followed by Melissa McCarthy, who appeared behind the bar and commented on not being able to find a drink. She pointed out that only cans of beer belonging to John Mulaney were available, leading to more back-and-forth.
During the segment, Marcello Hernandez also appeared in character as Domingo. He jokingly claimed that he had been on the show five times, counting the current appearance.
Later in the segment, the episode’s musical guest Jack White made an appearance, getting a laugh of his own on stage. The bit wrapped up with Jack Black and Jack White performing a parody of “Seven Nation Army,” originally by The White Stripes.
