Big news dropped about the revival of Malcolm in the Middle. Erik Per Sullivan, who originally played Dewey, will not be returning this time, despite efforts to bring him back.
Per reports, the show’s producers approached Erik Per Sullivan, who is currently studying at Harvard University, to reprise his role as Dewey. However, he turned down the offer.
In an interview with The Guardian, star Jane Kaczmarek, who played his on-screen mother Lois, shared that the retired actor is now focused on his studies. She revealed that he was offered “buckets of money” to return, but he simply declined.
In the upcoming four-episode revival titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, Erik Per Sullivan will be the only original cast member to be recast. The role of Dewey will now be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
The story pulls Malcolm back into his family’s chaos when Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) drag him back home for their 40th wedding anniversary party.
Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm, while Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield reprise their roles as his brothers Francis and Reese. Emy Coligado is back as Francis’ wife, Piama.
The revival will also introduce Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as the youngest siblings, now grown-up, Jamie and Kelly. Oh, and Keeley Karsten will play Malcolm’s daughter Leah, and Kiana Madeira will appear as his girlfriend Tristan.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is set to premiere on April 10 on Hulu and Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S., and internationally on Disney+.
Does Dewey even matter to this revival, or is Malcolm the whole show anyway? Erik Per Sullivan sitting this one out is a big deal, but maybe Caleb Ellsworth-Clark surprises everyone. Can the recast actually work, or is this already a red flag? Drop your take below.
