HBO‘s popular comedy series Rooster has been picked up for a second season. The show stars Steve Carell in the lead role and has received a strong response from audiences.

According to HBO, the first four episodes of this college-set series have averaged 5.8 million viewers in the United States. The network states that Rooster is on track to become its most-watched freshman comedy in over a decade.

The first season consists of 10 episodes, with new episodes airing every Sunday at 10 p.m. The Season 1 finale is scheduled to air on May 10 on HBO and HBO Max.

Rooster was created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses. The series digs into a messy father-daughter dynamic, with Steve Carell playing a commercially successful author, while Charly Clive portrays his daughter, a professor going through a difficult and public divorce.

The series also features Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai in key roles.

On the production side, the executive producers include Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer for Doozer, along with Matt Tarses, Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, David Hyman, and Steve Carell. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

In a statement, Bill Lawrence thanked HBO and Warner Bros. Television for their partnership and described the show as a career highlight.

Meanwhile, HBO’s EVP of programming and head of comedy series, Amy Gravitt, said it has been encouraging to see audiences embrace Rooster, and said she’s hyped for where the show goes next.

Additionally, Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs at WBD, praised the series, calling it heartfelt and endearing, and said that its renewal for a second season is well deserved. He also pointed to how the creators mix laughs with real gut-punch moments through a stacked cast led by Steve Carell.

With the numbers climbing and word-of-mouth building, Rooster looks like it’s got plenty more to offer in its upcoming second season.
