HBO Max’s hit medical drama ‘The Pitt’ is headed for a major cast shake-up — actress Supriya Ganesh is exiting the show after Season 2, while Ayesha Harris has been promoted to series regular.

SPOILER ALERT: The following will reveal plot points from the Season 2 finale of HBO Max‘s “The Pitt.”
Supriya Ganesh, who has played Dr. Samira Mohan since Season 1, will depart the show after Season 2. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the exit is a story-driven decision. Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center is a teaching hospital, where residents cycling in and out is common practice.
Mohan’s final scene in the Season 2 finale takes place on the hospital rooftop. Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill and star Noah Wyle recently opened up to Variety about the news, which left viewers surprised. Throughout the season, Mohan’s character was shown struggling on both personal and professional fronts — dealing with pressure from home and wrestling with uncertainty about her career path.
Gemmill framed the change as built into the show’s format. “The nature of the business of a teaching hospital is that people come and go, and we try to be as realistic as possible,” he said. “People will come, and people will go — and that’s just the nature of the show.” He also made clear that similar departures should be expected in future seasons.

At PaleyFest in Los Angeles on April 11, Wyle told Variety, “Emergency rooms have a high revolving door. As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the storylines fresh. Dr. Mohan is a beloved character, and we’re going to miss her.”
Alongside Ganesh’s exit, Ayesha Harris — who plays Dr. Parker Ellis — has been promoted to series regular for Season 3. Harris is known for her work on Amazon Prime Video’s ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ and Netflix’s ‘Glamorous.’
This isn’t the first major cast departure the show has seen. After Season 1, Tracy Ifeachor exited her role as Dr. Heather Collins, with her character’s absence explained early in Season 2 — Collins had completed her residency and relocated to Portland to take a position as an attending physician.
‘The Pitt’ streams exclusively on HBO Max and has earned strong reviews from critics since its debut. Season 3 is expected to premiere in 2027. The show’s casting strategy — using realistic staff turnover as a narrative tool — distinguishes it from other medical dramas and keeps its portrayal of hospital life grounded.
