Jean Smart gave us five seasons of the best comedy on television. After tonight, it’s over.
The series finale of Hacks drops on HBO Max tonight, Thursday, May 28, at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT and if you haven’t been watching this show, I genuinely feel bad for you. Because what Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky built over five seasons is the kind of thing that only comes along once in a very long time.
Season 5 is ten episodes. It premiered April 9. And tonight, episode 10 closes the book on Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels for good.
Here’s Where We Left Off
Season 5 picked up after the chaos of Season 4’s finale — Deborah resigned from her own late-night show rather than let her boss fire Ava. That moment was basically the whole show in one decision. Deborah Vance choosing a person over a career. Huge.
This final season sent Deborah and Ava back to Vegas with one goal: lock in Deborah’s legacy before the industry forgets her entirely. And it’s been a wild ride. We got Deborah at Madison Square Garden — sold out, the crowd finally back on her side — but the show made sure you understood what that win actually cost her. Nothing on Hacks is free.
The penultimate episode left fans completely stressed out, and now everyone’s just sitting here waiting for tonight.
Why the Finale Is Going to Hit Different
The creators have been planning this ending since before the show even aired. Paul W. Downs said the final scene was locked in their heads since 2015. When they pitched Hacks to HBO in 2019, they literally described the last scene. That’s how intentional this show has always been.
Jean Smart said she was “shocked” when she finally read the scripts — the ending was nothing she could have imagined. But then she got it. “I realized, no, it’ll work,” Smart told outlets, “because they’re writing it and they’re amazing.”
The finale is described as “a little more realistic” rather than a big tearjerker moment. Which honestly tracks for Hacks — this show has never done easy. Deborah and Ava don’t get a clean bow. They get something true.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
Since it launched on May 13, 2021, Hacks has won 12 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Season 5 currently sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is not a show that stumbled toward its ending — it ran the whole distance.
Jean Smart is 73 years old and spent five seasons being the most compelling person on prestige television. That alone deserves a conversation. HBO basically handed a lead drama — dressed up as a comedy — to a woman the industry would have put in a supporting role fifteen years ago. And she destroyed it.
Hannah Einbinder grew up on this show too. Ava Daniels went from a broke, morally complicated writer hiding behind sarcasm to someone who actually had to sit with the consequences of her choices. The character work here is genuinely something.
What This Actually Means
Hacks ending tonight is a bigger deal than people are giving it credit for. This show proved that you could build prestige TV around women over 60. It proved that comedy could carry the same emotional weight as drama. It proved that a story about two people who get on each other’s nerves can be more compelling than anything with explosions or courtroom twists.
The streaming landscape is going to feel the gap. Hacks was one of the last shows where you actually waited for Thursday night.
