Actress Amanda Peet has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer, sharing her experience in a deeply personal essay.
The news came during an already difficult time, as both of her parents were receiving hospice care on opposite coasts.
Peet, known for films like The Whole Nine Yards and Something’s Gotta Give, has long been a familiar face in Hollywood.
She has maintained regular health checkups over the years, visiting her doctor every six months due to having dense breast tissue, which can make early detection more challenging.
Last year, just before Labor Day, she went in for what she believed would be a routine scan. During the appointment, her doctor noticed something unusual on the ultrasound and recommended a biopsy. Soon after, Peet learned that she had a small tumor.
The diagnosis brought a wave of anxiety for Peet and her husband, Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff. However, initial test results showed that her cancer was hormone-receptor-positive and HER2-negative, a combination that is generally considered more treatable.
Further testing, including an MRI, confirmed that the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes. However, doctors identified a second mass in the same breast, delaying her planned surgery and requiring another biopsy.
Peet later shared that the procedure was physically and emotionally difficult.
In the end, the second mass turned out to be benign. Doctors proceeded with a lumpectomy followed by radiation, and Peet did not require chemotherapy or a double mastectomy.
Her cancer was diagnosed at Stage I, an early stage that allowed for effective treatment.
Peet described the final phase of radiation as the most uncomfortable part of the process, but she completed treatment successfully.
At the beginning of the year, she received a clear scan, marking a major milestone in her recovery.
Peet’s story highlights the importance of regular screenings and early detection, as well as the emotional strength required to face both illness and personal hardship at once.
