In a move few saw coming, Apple and Netflix are joining forces to bring fans even more Formula 1 action this season.

The two media giants announced a new partnership that will see them share select F1 programming — including a simulcast of the Canadian Grand Prix and the highly anticipated eighth season of Drive to Survive.

Season eight of the hit docuseries drops at midnight tonight on both platforms, marking the first time Apple TV will stream the series alongside Netflix.

The show has been widely credited with helping grow Formula 1’s popularity in the United States, turning drivers into household names and giving fans behind-the-scenes access to the high-stakes world of racing.

The collaboration doesn’t stop there. From May 22–24, Netflix will simulcast the Canadian Grand Prix live in the U.S., while the race will also stream on Apple TV as planned. For Netflix, it’s another step into live sports programming.

For Apple, it’s a way to expand the reach of its F1 investment and offer fans more ways to watch.

Apple’s senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, revealed the agreement during a conference call with reporters, describing it as part of a broader effort to elevate Formula 1 coverage ahead of the new season kickoff in Melbourne, Australia.

Apple secured U.S. rights to Formula 1 last year in a deal reportedly valued between $140 million and $150 million annually.

The company has been weaving F1 content across its ecosystem — including Apple News, Apple Maps and Apple Music — creating a more immersive experience for fans.

Meanwhile, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has previously praised longtime U.S. broadcaster ESPN for helping grow the sport during a critical period.

Although Apple now holds key rights, F1 continues to work with ESPN’s parent company, The Walt Disney Company, on other projects.

With streaming rivals now working together — at least for Formula 1 — racing fans are the real winners.
