Accepting an MLK Jr. award, Billie Eilish shifted focus from herself to what she calls urgent threats to civil rights and safety.
At just 24, Billie Eilish has grown used to standing on award stages.
But when she accepted the MLK Jr. Beloved Community Award for Environmental Justice in Atlanta on Jan. 17, the singer made it clear the night was not about celebration—it was about accountability.
Rather than centering her own achievements, Eilish used the moment to draw attention to what she described as worsening conditions in the U.S., particularly under Donald Trump’s administration. In a speech prepared ahead of the ceremony, she spoke plainly about fear, inequality, and violence affecting everyday people.
“It feels very strange to be celebrated,” Eilish said, explaining that environmental justice feels increasingly out of reach as civil rights are stripped away and public safety erodes.
She pointed to reports of peaceful protesters being assaulted, communities losing access to healthcare and food, and climate protections being rolled back in favor of fossil fuels and animal agriculture.
A major focus of her remarks was Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which she accused of inflicting harm on communities. Her comments followed the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good earlier this month by an ICE agent.
In response, Eilish had already taken to Instagram, reposting messages condemning the agency and sharing the names of 32 people who died in ICE custody in 2025—one of the deadliest years in the agency’s history.
“It’s very clear that protecting our planet and our communities is not a priority for this administration,” Eilish said during the ceremony. “We no longer feel safe in our own homes or on our streets.”
This is not the first time Eilish has used a high-profile platform to speak out. At the WSJ Innovator Awards in October, she urged wealthy Americans to show more empathy and give back. That same night, it was revealed that $11.5 million from her tour would be donated to various organizations.
Still, Eilish resists being labeled a role model. In a 2024 Rolling Stone interview, she said she only hopes to influence people to live more consciously—especially when it comes to the environment and animal agriculture.
Though she admitted she didn’t feel “deserving” of the MLK Jr. honor, Eilish closed her speech with gratitude and hope, thanking her parents and the community of activists inspired by Dr. King’s message.
“I have this platform,” she said simply, “and I feel a responsibility to use it.”
