Britney Spears is making one of the biggest business moves of her career — and this time, it’s fully on her own terms.

The pop superstar has sold her song catalog and select rights to music publishing company Primary Wave, according to multiple reports.

While exact details have not been publicly confirmed, sources told Variety that the deal is believed to be worth in the low nine figures. Representatives for both Spears and Primary Wave declined to comment.

For fans who grew up blasting “…Baby One More Time” and “Toxic,” the news feels like the end of an era — but also the start of something new.

Spears’ recorded music catalog is owned and controlled by Sony Music, which means this deal likely includes her artist royalties and publishing rights. She has songwriting credits on nearly 40 tracks, including the emotional ballad “Everytime” and fan favorites like “Me Against the Music,” “S&M,” and “Work Bitch!”

It does not appear that her name and likeness rights were part of the agreement.

The timing is interesting. Spears hasn’t released a studio album since 2016’s Glory and hasn’t performed live since 2018, when she wrapped her “Piece of Me” tour in Austin, Texas.

She was set to return to Las Vegas in 2019 with a second residency titled Domination, but she ultimately stepped away from performing.

After gaining freedom from her 13-year conservatorship in 2021, Spears has mostly stayed out of the spotlight — though she remains active on Instagram, where she shares personal messages and dance videos with fans.

Just last month, she shut down rumors of a U.S. comeback tour, writing that she would “never perform in the U.S. again” for “extremely sensitive reasons.” Still, she hinted at the possibility of performing in the U.K. or Australia someday.

Meanwhile, her legacy continues to grow. A biopic based on her bestselling memoir The Woman in Me is in development at Universal Pictures, and her Broadway jukebox musical Once Upon a One More Time debuted in 2023.

Catalog sales have become common among major artists in recent years, with stars like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Bieber striking similar deals.

For Spears, the move may represent financial security — and creative distance — as she focuses on healing and life beyond the stage.

Britney Spears changed pop music forever. Now, she’s redefining what the next chapter looks like.

What do you think about artists selling their music catalogs? Would you still love Britney’s classics the same way?
