Hollywood, which is considered one of the most influential film industries in the world, is currently going through a new kind of challenge. Popular actress and producer Issa Rae recently said that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the industry is no longer as strong as it used to be.
According to her, DEI is slowly turning into a “bad word,” and people are starting to distance themselves from it.
About a decade ago, her show “Insecure” brought a major change by highlighting the real-life experiences of the Black community. At that time, it felt like Hollywood was moving toward becoming more inclusive and diverse.
However, Issa Rae now believes that the industry is once again moving backward, and representation is becoming limited.
She pointed out that companies are no longer investing in diverse projects the way they used to. Many executives are hesitant to openly support DEI because they fear losing their jobs. In addition, the meaning of DEI itself seems to be changing, and it is increasingly being viewed in a negative way.
There are several possible reasons behind this shift. Due to economic pressure, companies are focusing more on safe and profitable projects. At the same time, the rise of social media platforms is challenging traditional storytelling.
Some experts also believe that the current social and policy environment has made companies more cautious.
This situation may have the biggest impact on creators from minority backgrounds, especially women of color. It is also believed that audiences might feel the effect, as the number of diverse stories could decrease and content may become less varied.
Issa Rae also mentioned that creators today have to present their projects in a different way. Sometimes, they have to frame their stories in a way that feels more “safe” or “marketable” in order to get them approved.
