Roberts won Season 23 of American Idol in 2025 with approximately 26 million votes in the finale, one of the biggest vote totals the show has ever seen. He defeated John Foster and Breanna Nix to take the title, and the win is kind of a big deal for another reason too — he became one of the few Black male winners in the show’s history over the past two decades. Fans definitely took notice.
None of it came out of nowhere though. Roberts’ success comes down to his emotional and powerful vocal performances throughout the season, impressing both judges and viewers across different genres and proving he can do it all.
What makes his story hit different is where he came from. Originally from Meridian, Mississippi, Jamal Roberts was a P.E. teacher before blowing up. He started singing in church, pushed by his family to chase music — and clearly, that bet paid off.
Since winning, things have moved fast. His song “Heal” took off and hit number one on the Billboard Gospel chart. On top of that, his track “Still” landed him a Grammy nomination in 2025 for Best Gospel Performance/Song — and that’s no small thing.
