Michael B. Jordan is in early negotiations to star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice reboot, with Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski set to direct.

The project aims to bring the iconic 1980s television series back to the big screen, blending high-octane action with the neon-soaked style that defined an era.

If the deal is finalized, Jordan will take on the role of Ricardo Tubbs, one half of the legendary undercover cop duo, Crockett and Tubbs. The counterpart role of James “Sonny” Crockett has not yet been cast, but the studio is reportedly seeking another major star to complete the pair.

The new film will revisit the glamour, danger, and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, a city pulsing with music, fashion, and crime — the perfect backdrop for the stylish police procedural that became a pop-culture phenomenon.

The original Miami Vice television series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, premiered on NBC in 1984 and ran for five seasons. It starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo Tubbs, two Miami detectives known for their pastel suits, fast cars, and cutting-edge soundtrack featuring artists like Phil Collins and Jan Hammer.

The show’s blend of cinematic visuals and music video aesthetics helped redefine television storytelling and influenced everything from fashion trends to filmmaking styles in the 1980s.

This new adaptation will reportedly draw inspiration from the pilot episode and first season of the series while delivering a fresh cinematic take on the story.

The film is being produced by Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Kosinski, with a screenplay by Oscar-nominated writers Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle) and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), based on Yerkovich’s original characters.

The last Miami Vice feature film hit theaters in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. While reviews were mixed, the film grossed $163.7 million worldwide and earned praise for its gritty realism and sleek visuals.

Universal Pictures has not yet announced a release date or additional casting details. However, with Jordan’s star power and Kosinski’s proven skill at creating stylish, high-energy action films, the reboot is already generating strong buzz in Hollywood.
