NBC is clearly in a crime-solving mood.

The network has ordered two more drama pilots — What the Dead Know and Puzzled — signaling a major push toward smart, character-driven mysteries as it shapes its 2026 season.

The new orders bring NBC’s total pilot pickups this week to six, showing the network is wasting no time refreshing its slate.

One of the biggest names behind the move is Dick Wolf, the legendary creator of Law & Order. His new project, What the Dead Know, is inspired by a memoir from former New York City medical examiner Barbara Butcher.

The show centers on Ava Ledger, a death investigator who understands bodies far better than people. While she excels at reading clues from the deceased, navigating real-world relationships proves far messier.

Ava teams up with the NYPD to crack their most disturbing cases, blending emotional depth with classic procedural storytelling.

Beth Rinehart, known for her work on FBI: Most Wanted and Law & Order: SVU, serves as writer and executive producer. Wolf Entertainment produces the pilot, with Universal Television as the studio.

The second pilot, Puzzled, brings a more cerebral twist to crime-solving. Based on Danielle Trussoni’s “Puzzle Master” novels, the series follows Mike Brink, a former college athlete whose life changes after a tragic fire.

A brain injury gives him an unusual way of seeing patterns others miss — a gift that helps him assist local police with complex crimes. The pilot comes from writer Joey Falco (Charmed, Sleepy Hollow) and leans into the idea that trauma can sometimes unlock unexpected strengths.

These projects join a growing list of fresh ideas at NBC, including a detective comedy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor, a crime drama inspired by real FBI research, a family-focused thriller titled Protection, and a modern update of The Rockford Files.

Together, the pilots suggest NBC is betting big on stories that mix heart, intellect, and high-stakes mystery — a strategy clearly designed to keep viewers guessing well into 2026.
