Paramount Pictures is changing course with “Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender,” deciding to skip movie theaters and release the highly anticipated animated film exclusively on Paramount+ instead.

The fantasy movie, which continues the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, was originally set for a theatrical release on Oct. 9. Now, Paramount confirms the film will debut on the streaming platform sometime in the fall, marking a major shift in how the studio plans to grow the franchise.

Alongside the movie, Paramount+ is also moving forward with a brand-new animated series titled “Avatar: Seven Havens.” The show is part of a broader strategy to keep the entire Avatar universe focused solely on streaming. Currently, Paramount+ already hosts the original Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, all four seasons of The Legend of Korra, and the 2010 animated film.

Jane Wiseman, Paramount+’s head of originals, said the platform is committed to being the main home for Avatar storytelling. She praised the franchise’s lasting popularity and said both Legend of Aang and Avatar: Seven Havens represent the next chapter for Avatar Studios.

According to Wiseman, the new projects aim to deliver the same emotional depth and epic adventures fans have loved for the past 20 years.

The decision to move Legend of Aang to streaming leaves Paramount with a noticeably thin theatrical lineup in 2026.

The studio’s current movie schedule includes Primate in January, Scream 7 in February, Scary Movie 6 in June, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie in August, Street Fighter in October, and The Angry Birds 3 in December. Without a major animated event like Legend of Aang in theaters, the slate lacks a clear blockbuster anchor.

For fans, the shift means no big-screen return to the Avatar world — but easier access at home. With multiple movies and series now centralized on Paramount+, the streamer is betting that convenience and loyalty will outweigh the theatrical experience.
