Nathan Fillion confirms an animated ‘Firefly’ series is in development, bringing back much of the original cast more than two decades later.

More than two decades after it first aired, the cult sci-fi favorite Firefly may soon fly again—this time in animated form.
Actor Nathan Fillion surprised fans during a panel appearance at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., revealing that an animated series based on the beloved franchise is now in advanced development.
The project is being built with the support of several original cast members and could expand the story of the scrappy crew of the spaceship Serenity.
The announcement came during a live recording of Fillion and Alan Tudyk’s podcast, Once We Were Spacemen, where several actors from the original show gathered on stage. Alongside Fillion and Tudyk were Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau—many of whom are expected to return to voice their characters in the animated version.
Adam Baldwin, who portrayed the tough mercenary Jayne Cobb, is also set to lend his voice to the project.
For longtime fans, the idea of a Firefly revival—especially with the original cast—is something many had hoped for but never fully expected.
“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant,” Fillion said during the announcement. “Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.”
A New Chapter for an Old Universe
The animated project is being developed through Fillion’s production company, Collision33, in partnership with 20th Television Animation, which holds the rights to the franchise.
Writers and producers Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are attached as showrunners. The pair have experience in genre television, having worked on projects such as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Agent Carter, and Reaper.
According to people involved with the production, a script for the series has already been completed.
One notable absence from the project is Joss Whedon, the creator of the original Firefly. He is not involved in the development of the animated series.
The new show is planned to take place between the events of the original 2002 television series and the 2005 film Serenity, which served as a cinematic continuation of the story after the show was canceled.
Setting the animated series during that timeline allows the creators to explore untold adventures while staying consistent with the established narrative.
Early Artwork and Industry Partners
The creative team has already developed early concept art for the series in collaboration with ShadowMachine, an Oscar- and Emmy-winning animation studio known for its distinctive style and work on several acclaimed animated projects.
Producers have assembled an early package—including artwork, a script, and the returning cast—and are expected to present it to potential buyers soon. That could include major streaming platforms or television networks interested in reviving the long-dormant franchise.
While the show has not yet secured a distribution home, the early momentum suggests the project is being taken seriously within the industry.
A Franchise That Refused to Fade
Originally produced by 20th Century Fox Television, Firefly debuted in 2002. Despite strong fan enthusiasm and critical praise, the series lasted only one season before it was canceled.
The story followed a small group of outlaws and misfits traveling through space aboard the transport ship Serenity in the year 2517. Led by Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds—played by Fillion—the crew survived by taking risky jobs on the edges of society while avoiding the powerful Alliance government.
Though its run was short, Firefly gained a passionate fan base over the years. DVD sales, streaming availability, and fan conventions helped the show grow into one of television’s most well-known cult classics.
The story was later continued with the 2005 feature film Serenity, which reunited the cast and resolved several unfinished plotlines. Actor Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Derrial Book in both the series and the film, died in 2016.
Even after the movie, however, fans continued to call for more stories set in the Firefly universe.
A Podcast That Sparked Nostalgia
The renewed interest in the franchise has also been fueled by Fillion and Tudyk’s podcast, Once We Were Spacemen, which launched in November.
The podcast brings together former cast members and other creators to revisit their experiences working on the series and film. Across its first 18 episodes, the show has featured behind-the-scenes memories, discussions about science fiction storytelling, and plenty of humor between the former co-stars.
For many listeners, the podcast has felt like an informal reunion—something that likely helped build excitement for the animated announcement.
Social Media Buzz Builds
The reveal at Awesome Con followed a week-long social media campaign in which Fillion posted short, mysterious videos hinting that news was coming. The clips quickly spread online and generated millions of views, sparking speculation among fans about a possible Firefly revival.
By the time Fillion stepped on stage at the convention panel, anticipation had already reached a peak.
Once the news was confirmed, Firefly quickly returned to trending topics on several social platforms, with fans celebrating the possibility of seeing the crew of Serenity together again.
Fillion’s Expanding Creative Role
For Fillion, the animated project also represents a growing role behind the scenes as a producer.
He launched Collision33 in 2024 alongside manager and producing partner Michelle Chapman. The company secured a first-look deal with Lionsgate and has since expanded its development slate.
Fillion and Chapman are executive producers on ABC’s hit police drama The Rookie, where Fillion also stars. The show is currently developing a spinoff titled The Rookie: North, which is already in production.
Collision33 has also partnered with Dark Horse Comics to create a new original comic series called Witness Point.
Beyond producing, Fillion remains active as an actor. He recently appeared as Guy Gardner, also known as Green Lantern, in Warner Bros.’ upcoming Superman film and is expected to reprise the role in HBO’s series Lanterns.
Still, for many fans, his most beloved role remains Captain Malcolm Reynolds—the stubborn but loyal leader of Serenity’s crew.
If the animated series moves forward, those fans may soon get the chance to hear that familiar voice guiding the ship through new adventures.
After years of hoping for another chapter in the Firefly universe, the crew might finally be preparing to fly again.
