‘Dutton Ranch’ Showrunner Exits Yellowstone Spinoff Weeks Before Premiere, Raising Fresh Questions About Taylor Sheridan’s Universe

Chad Feehan Departs as Executive Producer and Creator Just Weeks Before the May 15 Launch — A High-Stakes Moment for Paramount+’s Flagship Franchise

Taylor Sheridan’s much-anticipated Yellowstone universe is absorbing another behind-the-scenes blow. Dutton Ranch showrunner and creator Chad Feehan has exited the spinoff series just weeks ahead of its May 15 premiere. The departure adds turbulence to one of Paramount’s most commercially critical launches of the year.

Feehan, who also held an executive producer credit on the project, has departed without an official explanation. The circumstances behind the exit have not been publicly disclosed by either the studio or the production.

Leadership shake-ups on Taylor Sheridan productions are far from unprecedented. Across the Yellowstone franchise — including 1883 and 1923 — showrunners have cycled out with notable regularity, a dynamic that industry insiders have long observed.

The pattern has drawn comparisons within the industry to the revolving-door drummer situation famously satirized in This Is Spinal Tap.

Dutton Ranch picks up the story of Yellowstone‘s most beloved characters — Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, played by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser — as they attempt to build a new life far from the shadow of the Dutton legacy.

The official logline reads: Beth and Rip relocate to South Texas, where they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch willing to go to any lengths to protect its empire — where blood runs deeper than forgiveness, and the cost of survival may be their souls.

Finn Little returns as the couple’s adopted son, Carter. The supporting cast includes Ed Harris, Annette Bening, Jai Courtney, Juan Pablo Raba, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind — making it one of the most star-studded ensemble casts in the franchise’s history. The series is based on characters created by executive producers Taylor Sheridan and John Linson.

Dutton Ranch is set to debut on both Paramount+ and the Paramount Network on May 15 at 8 p.m., with a two-episode launch followed by weekly installments across a nine-episode first season.

For Paramount Global, the stakes could not be higher. Yellowstone was a cultural and ratings phenomenon for the Paramount Network — routinely ranking among the most-watched cable dramas in the United States — and Dutton Ranch is tasked with carrying that audience forward into a new chapter.

A showrunner exit this close to launch creates both operational and reputational headwinds for the studio. As of press time, Paramount has not issued a public statement regarding Feehan’s departure.

Dutton Ranch premieres May 15 on Paramount+ and the Paramount Network.
