When Beyond the Gates airs its anniversary episode this Tuesday, it won’t just mark 12 months on television — it will celebrate a dream decades in the making.

Executive producer Sheila Ducksworth recently reflected on the journey during Variety’s Strictly Business podcast, describing the launch of a daytime soap as the most challenging — and rewarding — chapter of her career. For Ducksworth, the show’s success is deeply personal.

As a child, she was glued to General Hospital, but she longed to see more families who looked like hers at the center of those sweeping stories.

That early spark eventually became a mission. In February 2024, that vision turned into reality when Beyond the Gates debuted on CBS. Set in a gated community in the DMV area, the drama follows the wealthy Black Dupree family and has now aired more than 230 episodes across two seasons.

As the show heads into year two, the momentum is only building. In June, a major crossover will bring characters from The Young and the Restless into the Beyond the Gates world — including members of the iconic Newman and Abbott families.

For longtime soap fans, it promises a week packed with drama and nostalgia.

Before that, viewers can expect a meaningful episode featuring Gayle King, who will guest star alongside actress Tamara Tunie in a breast cancer awareness storyline produced with nonprofit Know Your Lemons. Ducksworth believes the episode won’t just entertain — it could truly change lives.

There’s also a glamorous cotillion episode coming in May and a surprise Tony- and Grammy-winning guest star set for Easter.

For Ducksworth, reaching the one-year milestone isn’t just about ratings or headlines. It’s proof that persistence, representation and holding onto a lifelong dream can reshape daytime television — one episode at a time.
