Dave Matthews Breaks His Silence After Minnesota ICE Shooting, Calling It a ‘Dark and Dangerous Moment’

Dave Matthews says the fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis pushed him to speak out, calling it a moment that shows how broken the system feels right now.

Dave Matthews is adding his voice to the growing outrage after the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis — and he isn’t holding back.

The Dave Matthews Band frontman shared a long, emotional video on Instagram on Jan. 9, using his birthday as a moment to reflect on what he called a deeply troubling time in the U.S. Rather than focusing only on politics, Matthews framed his message around values, community, and responsibility.

“I don’t want my taxes paying for fear,” Matthews said as he walked through his neighborhood. He criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), saying law enforcement should protect communities instead of making people feel unsafe. “We should be taking care of each other,” he added, calling for more compassion and support for vulnerable people.

The video came days after 37-year-old Renee Good was shot and killed during an ICE operation on Jan. 7. She was inside her car when the officer fired. Federal officials have claimed Good tried to hit the officer with her vehicle, but Matthews said publicly available video footage tells a different story.

“No matter how they slow it down or explain it,” Matthews said, “it looks like she was trying to get away.” He described the shooting as a tragic loss that should never have happened.

Good’s death sparked protests across Minneapolis, with residents gathering to mourn and demand answers. Mayor Jacob Frey also spoke out, calling the shooting reckless and urging federal agents to leave the city.

Matthews didn’t stop there. He expanded his criticism to broader government actions, including U.S. involvement in other countries, saying America should not act like it owns the world or its resources.

Closing his message, the singer sounded both angry and heartbroken. He called current leadership dishonest and warned that moments like this should be a wake-up call.

“These are dark times,” Matthews said plainly — a message that resonated quickly with fans, many of whom flooded the comments with support and grief.
