The 2026 Hollywood box office is currently at an interesting turning point, where on one hand big franchise films continue to dominate, while on the other, original story-driven movies are making a strong comeback.
The biggest film of the year so far is “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which has earned around $629 million and secured the number one spot at the global box office. This success didn’t come out of nowhere—it’s backed by the long-standing popularity of the Mario brand and strong support from family audiences.
When compared to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made about $1.3 billion in 2023, it’s clear that the new installment is following a similar trajectory and could realistically cross the $1 billion mark in the coming weeks.
What makes the film stand out is that it hasn’t just relied on a strong opening weekend; it has maintained solid momentum internationally even in its second weekend. At a time when many films see sharp drops after their debut, Mario’s consistency shows it has strong staying power.
Family and animated films typically enjoy longer theatrical runs, largely because they attract repeat viewings, and this film is clearly benefiting from that pattern.
At the same time, Project Hail Mary has carved out its own space at the box office. The film has now crossed the $500 million mark, which is especially impressive given that it isn’t part of any established franchise.
In today’s market, where most top earners are sequels or superhero titles, the success of “Project Hail Mary” proves that audiences are still willing to show up for fresh, well-told stories. Its performance is reminiscent of Oppenheimer, which also achieved major success purely on the strength of its content rather than brand recognition.
Meanwhile, The Drama is another notable example, gaining attention despite its smaller scale. Made on a modest budget, the film has delivered solid returns and sparked significant online conversation. This highlights an important shift: big budgets are no longer the only path to success—unique, bold storytelling can also capture audience interest and drive engagement.
Looking at the broader trend, 2023 was largely dominated by franchise-driven hits, but 2026 is showing signs of a shift. While major brands like Mario continue to lead the market, original films like “Project Hail Mary” are proving that strong storytelling still matters.
However, Mario’s real test is yet to come. Upcoming releases such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, and Avengers: Doomsday are all major contenders with clear $1 billion potential.
