Ted Cruz has publicly challenged Meghan Markle’s recent claim that she is “the most trolled person in the entire world,” arguing instead that President Donald Trump holds that distinction. The exchange comes as scrutiny intensifies around online harassment of public figures and its impact on mental health.
Speaking with reporters on Capitol Hill, Cruz said the assertion doesn’t align with reality. In his view, Trump has faced a far greater volume and intensity of online criticism. “If you look at the scale of public response and digital engagement, Trump is clearly at the top—and it’s not close,” a political communications strategist said on condition of anonymity.
Markle made her comments during a recent public appearance, describing years of sustained online attacks. She characterized the digital media ecosystem as “cruel,” arguing that negativity is often amplified to drive clicks and views.

This isn’t the first time Markle has framed her experience this way. In 2019, she said she was the “most trolled person” of that year, adding that the volume of negative commentary had a significant emotional and psychological impact.
Prince Harry has echoed those concerns in multiple appearances, noting that Markle was among the most targeted public figures online during 2018–2019. The couple has since leaned into digital well-being initiatives and advocacy around online safety.
Cruz, for his part, acknowledged that he also attracts significant online criticism but views it differently. “Trolling is part of public life now—the question is how you handle it,” said a Washington-based media analyst.
For the entertainment and media sectors, the debate underscores broader questions about platform accountability and content moderation. In recent years, streamers, social platforms and PR firms have invested more heavily in tools and policies aimed at curbing harassment and protecting talent.
